However, humans have not remained defenseless. The study of germs led to the greatest breakthroughs in medical history: vaccines and antibiotics. By understanding how germs work, we learned to prime our immune systems with weakened versions of them or use chemical "magic bullets" to kill bacteria without harming ourselves. Yet, this battle is an arms race.
