Whenever an opportunity came up, it could be a scholarship, a contest, a new course, she would sigh and complain about how unfair and difficult her life was. “You don’t know how hard it is for me” she would say to everyone.


But the truth was clear to everyone else. Nothing really got in her way. She had supportive teachers, a family that encouraged her, she had money and all the resources at hand. We noticed that Sofia was staying behind while we all grew up, tangled in excuses only she believed.


One afternoon, after another round of complaints, one of her teachers finally looked her in the eyes and said: “Sofia, stop blaming obstacles that aren’t there. The only thing getting in your way is yourself.”


The words hit her hard. We were all shocked but kind of relieved someone finally had the guts to tell her the truth.
