Inclusivity and honoring culture. How do we create this? How can we use the student's backgrounds as a strength? How can we change the curriculum? Do family reading, math, history nights. Families can go into classrooms and learn how to teach certain concepts at home. Families can take home games. Make families feel more at home in school. Create a task force for homelessness. Give out resources. Create a community room.

program in Texas- an immersion school that emphasizes funds of knowledge- works with families and community members to empower them to teach by bringing in members of families and communities to increase buy in and center the learning experiences on topics such as food who are encountering challenges with food
bringing in the community- will lead to more investment from parents and positions them as experts
every grade level could have a different set of problems or skills they would focus on each year that would become more complicated as they progress in their time at the school- help them develop a deeper knowledge over time, also would lead to collaboration between grade levels
teachers will also learn to rely on one another and the community members- relationships grounded in trust
strong mentoring system for teachers- newer teachers support around discipline, community and family support around this to support these newer faculty

Parent and community involvement-- they have a place at the school
See the pride in the community everywhere! We want to be able to immerse ourselves!
We need adults to be open-minded to change
Events that showcase more than just academics-- culture, community, interests, etc (ex Dia de los muertos event with the whole community that is incorporated)

Expert on specifics (tiger teams)
Families allowed to share in the school experience
Support teachers/mentors support systems
Once a month socials (fall social)
Parent universities (parent feedback and collaboration)
Communications/field trips/guess lectures

Empowerment. We want to empower them. Food from the food bank. Do not look at the kids as poor. Provide parent classes- GED classes, language, free legal advice, mobile clinic. Address the out of school problems. Digital literacy night. Use a survey.

Trust

Community task force made up of admin, teachers, parents/community members, and students is proposing a shift to a community school model as a solution. This conversation is just getting underway and the task force is meeting for the first time all together to discuss what a community school will look like and what it will require to achieve.

McKinley Elementary is a 90/10 Spanish Dual Language Immersion in its third year of implementation.

260 Students TK-6th grade, 96% Hispanic, 87% Socioeconomically disadvantaged, 22% Homeless, 100% of staff are bilingual, 80% of teachers have three or less years of experience. ELA CAASPP scores are 56.6 points below standard. 78.01% of students are performing below standard.
