Frederick Douglass was born into slavery in 1818. Douglass wrote a book called The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass that was published in 1845. The book contains what Douglass heard, saw, and felt as a slave.(more background info about slavery in general and what happened in Douglass’s life)

Thesis statement: Along with the use of figurative language Douglass uses his personal experiences to reveal the effects of slavery on slaves and slave owners which supports his position to end slavery.

Topic Sentence: Douglass uses figurative language to support his position to end slavery
Quote 1:
Excerpt 4 Paragraph 4
“My natural elasticity was crushed, my intellect languished, the disposition to read departed, the cheerful spark that lingered about my eye died; the dark night of slavery closed in upon me; and behold a man transformed into a brute!”(make sure to say what cause him to become that way)

Quote 2:
Excerpt 5 paragraph 1
"On the one hand, there stood slavery, a stern reality, glaring frightfully upon us,—its robes already crimsoned with the blood of millions, and even now feasting itself greedily upon our own flesh. On the other hand, away back in the dim distance, under the flickering light of the north star, behind some craggy hill or snow-covered mountain, stood a doubtful freedom—half frozen— beckoning us to come and share its hospitality.”(I don’t think you need the 2nd part of this quote)

Topic sentence: (maybe start each topic sentence with something else other than Douglass or Frederick) Frederick uses personal experiences he encountered to prove that slavery is terrible for slaves which supports his position to end slavery.
Quote 1:
Excerpt 1 Paragraph 4
"I never saw my mother, to know her as such, more than
four or five times in my life; and each of these times was
very short in duration, and at night."
Quote 2:
Excerpt 4 Paragraph 2
“...succeeded in gaining my feet; but, stooping to get the tub with which I was feeding the fan, I again staggered and fell. While down in this situation, Mr. Covey took up the hickory slat with which Hughes had been striking off the half- bushel measure, and with it gave me a heavy blow upon the head, making a large wound, and the blood ran freely; and with this again told me to get up. ”

“There must be no halting; every one must be at his or her post; and woe betides them who hear not this morning summons to the field; for if they are not awakened by the sense of hearing, they are by the sense of feeling: no age nor sex finds any favor.” (I would chose a better quote that’s more clearer in what happened or explain clearly what happens in the quote)

She finally became even more violent in her opposition than her husband himself.

Topic Sentence: Frederick Douglass stood up for what he believed in and contributed to the ending of slavery. He gave people hope that if a person feels the need to force change, they can take action and achieve their goals. Today, Frederick Douglass continues to remind society the importance of motivation and the knowing that things will get better. He also reminds society the importance of freedom and being treated well.
(more about how it affects us today)
