The VietCong attacked 13 cities and other bases in the South. All of the attackers were killed, but the city of Hue and others sustained significant damage in the invasion. The North Vietnamese army had about 45,000 causalities, while the U.S. and South Vietnamese suffered fewer losses. The Khmer Rouge fought with the North Vietnamese Army against the Cambodian Monarchy. Nixon decided to invade Cambodia in order to further his Vietnamization plans. Nixon said a "Jungle Pentagon" where North Vietnamese plans against South Vietnam was supposedly destroyed. Hue was a large city in South Vietnam that remained mostly conflict-free for the beginning of the war. While the Tet Offensive was happening, North Vietnam took control of the city. Chaos happened even though the US and South Vietnam gained the city back. I think the biggest challenge was how different the war was fought compared to other recent wars, like the Korean War and World War Two. Vietnam was fought with Guerrilla warfare on unfamiliar terrain to the Americans. The North Vietnamese however knew the terrain and the style of war. Another challenge for the U.S was the lack of support from home. There were many anti-war protests, and the morale was low. The U.S. wasn't really fighting for itself, but for another country and democracy as a whole.
