Session 1: Meet and Greet by Sharmaine Itwaru

This is an individual posting activity. Please introduce yourself! In Part 1 of your post, tell us why you're taking your Brock degree, and your hopes, fears or expectations about this course. You may want to answer the following questions: What are your expectations for this course? What skills would you like to learn? What are your learning goals for this course? You may want to include a picture of yourself, but this is by no means necessary. In Part 2 of your post, show us your inner facilitator. What is your 'Fantasy Facilitation'? Is there a workshop or class you have always wanted to facilitate? Whether you have taught before or not, you probably have a hobby or interest that you would love to share with others. How would you go about this? A retreat? A city walk? A workshop? A shared project? Cost and location are no object. The rationale for this fantasy facilitation is to get the 'creative juices' flowing well in advance for assignment 3. Please read and respond to the posts of three of your peers. These don't have to be elaborate responses-just some greetings, comments, questions or "likes".

The photo is of my nephew Cruz & I - he is an absolute joy to be around and is a blessing to our family.

I decided to take the Bachelor of Education in Adult Education program at Brock for a few reasons. Firstly, it will allow me to advance my professional knowledge & skills in the post-secondary environment. I strongly believe that this program is the perfect fit for me and my future as an educator and that it will equip me to take the next step in my career. Secondly, my stepdaughter and three of my nieces attended Brock. They spoke very highly of the school, available courses/resources etc. and encouraged me to apply. Through this course, I hope to further enhance my instructional strategies.

Part 2

My “Fantasy Facilitation” would be on taking stunning photos with your cell phone. So many people ask me what kind of camera I have or what I used to take a specific picture. They are shocked when I say, just my cell phone. I firmly believe that the best camera is the one you have and that anyone can take great pictures using their cell phone. I think it could be easily done through an online workshop with some step-by-step video tutorials.

Hi everyone, my name is Trish. I am taking this course as part of the Bachelor of Adult ed. Degree. I have been an educator with younger and school-aged children for many years but I recently have had the opportunity to work as a TA and I realize I love working with adults as well. Therefore, I would like to learn more and perhaps one day teach at the other end of the spectrum. After reading the syllabus, I am very nervous about the final assignment as I have no idea what I will focus on and it will be a newer skill for me. I am excited to learn more about facilitation and designing courses for adult learners.

I have never really considered my “fantasy facilitation” but I think I would want to choose something that I know a lot about so that I felt comfortable presenting. Keeping that in mind, I would likely want to facilitate a workshop for toddler parents or do something related to cooking/baking. I would likely lean towards workshop-style facilitation- something a bit more hands-on for everyone involved.

Hello everyone! My name is Renee; I am from Northern Ontario, currently living in Sudbury. The picture I've uploaded is of my brother and I, a few years ago at the big nickel, a must-see in the city.
I have decided to pursue my degree in Adult Education to advance myself in the Dental Hygiene program at a local post-secondary institution. I am a Registered Dental Hygienist, used to working as a clinician. I have been transitioning into an educator role by sharpening my skills as a chairside clinical instructor, which has been a rewarding experience.
My expectations for this course are to further understand teaching principles and to learn skills to engage adult learners in their studies; this course will also help pave the way to becoming more well-rounded as an educator.
My learning goal includes strengthening my understanding of adult pedagogies by completing readings and participating in weekly group discussions.

I am gravitating toward a dental-related interest for my "Fantasy Facilitation." A course on my radar recently is "Oral Health Promotion." I have never taught this course, but generally, it is an introduction to all the tools available (toothbrushes, floss, interdental aids, you name it!) so that Dental Hygienists can recommend client-specific devices and can introduce them properly. I see myself facilitating this class with an interactive shared project in this fantasy. I would create groups within the classroom; each group would tackle unique case scenarios and create a project based on what they would recommend for that case. I hope to learn more and expand on this thought!

Renee

Hi everyone, my name is Mikayla, and I am from Sudbury, ON. I have been practicing Dental Hygiene for almost 5 years now. I am also working as a Dental Hygiene Technologist at the college, teaching students everything from the basics to the integral components of being a clinical dental hygienist. I have recently accepted a new role as a Professor at the college, which has been a dream of mine since I was a little girl. I always knew I had a passion to teach. A big part of why I am working towards completing my degree with Brock is to better prepare myself as an Educator, not only with students at the college, but also with colleagues and patients in private practice. I hope to learn new ways to sharpen my skills as an Educator in my new role.
A class I've always wanted to teach is Dental Hygiene Theory. This course is a culmination of the various courses taught within the dental hygiene program, and looks at how to apply dental hygiene knowledge into practice. Traditionally, this course is taught in a formal setting, where the Professor presents the ideas and the students are expected to regurgitate the information. However, in my "fantasy facilitation", I see myself approaching this course with a differing approach. I would utilize different learning techniques, such as break-out groups to encourage learners to share unique ideas and foster in-depth discussions. Additionally, I think it is pertinent to have an experiential learning opportunity within the course, that can aid the students in applying the knowledge learned into practice.

Hi all! My name is Stephanie and I’m participating from Vaughan, ON. I’m resuming my Adult Ed degree after pausing for several years while I focused on other things! I’m very nervous about returning as I now have two kids, a 5 YO and a 2 YO that keep me pretty busy and wear me out…in a good way! Mostly ;)

I love adult learning and I’ve been in the corporate training industry, primarily within financial institutions, for about 20 years. I recently took a 5 year hiatus from learning while I explored other areas within HR, but I couldn’t stay away for very long and so I’m back now and very happy. This course is coming at the perfect time for me because I feel like I’ve forgotten everything I used to know! Looking forward to gaining invaluable knowledge from the course and applying it at work where I currently manage a team of instructional designers who create enterprise wide learning programs such as our company orientation program. The week one readings have already helped me to shift my mindset on something I was grappling with.

I don’t know that I have a fantasy facilitation topic, although I do love courses that focus on helping people understand themselves and others better so that we can appreciate our differences, what we all bring to the table, and how our own styles might be perceived. Courses like DiSC, True Colours, and the like. What I really enjoyed facilitating in a past role, when I first started out in learning, was a 4-week role based training program for new call centre agents at a bank. I got the chance to both redesign the program and facilitate it, and so was able to see directly where my changes improved or didn’t improve the program and the impact it had on learners. That experience taught me a lot about myself as well, including that I loved design and evaluation more than I liked facilitation, and just how hard and stressful facilitating can be, but also how rewarding too, when your ‘new hires’ reach role proficiency and go on to do great things in the organization!

Looking forward to learning with you all!
-Stephanie

Part 1

Hello! My name is Shelley (she/her/they/them) and I'm living on unceded Algonquin Anishinaabe land in Ottawa. After many years of teaching related to sexual & reproductive health, I decided to take a couple of years away from my career to focus on school and this program in particular. Like many others in the adult education field, I fell into teaching through my knowledge and interest in a particular sector and wanted to take a step back to understand why we do what we do and connect theory to practice. My teaching style has changed a lot over the years and I’ve learned a great deal through skilled colleagues and teachers and even more from my learners. In this course my learning goal is to reconsider how I develop education for adult learners and have the opportunity to step back and think about course development from a more logical and holistic perspective. I also find I learn a tremendous amount through the modelling of my instructors, both in how to organize a course and also approaches for using technology and other resources.

Part 2

I would love to lead a walking tour of my neighbourhood, picking out all the plants that grow wild and talking about which ones are edible and which are poisonous. I would also bring a herbalist along on this walk and they could talk about the plants that can be used in first aid and health more generally as well as someone familiar with the original uses of local plants from an Algonquin perspective. Of course, at the end of our walk, we would have a city salad with the ingredients we picked along the way.

Hi everyone! My name is Ali and I'm a Registered Massage Therapist and Professor at a local post-secondary institution here in Sudbury, ON. I'm seeing a few other posts on the padlet from folks in Sudbury which is a fun coincidence!

I am mom to my almost 2-year-old son, and to my black lab & I love spending time outside with my family.

Part 1:

I decided to enroll in the BEd program at Brock to learn more about adult education, and to help me become a better instructor overall. I’m a little bit nervous to be enrolled in the Spring term because I’m expecting my second baby in early June, so I will have some challenges ahead with mapping out my coursework, but I am extremely excited to continue with my studies. I took ADED 2F90 last spring and haven’t been able to fit this next course into my schedule until now.

Part 2:

A workshop I have always wanted to facilitate is a prenatal massage workshop for other registered massage therapists. I have had the pleasure of teaching a maternal and infant care course at the college level, as well as being the clinical instructor for the placement portion of that course for a few semesters, and I think this would be beneficial for those who are already working in the profession. I hear often that RMTs feel they didn’t have access to this type of information while in school since some programs simply don’t teach about this topic in-depth, so the pregnant population is not one they are comfortable treating upon graduation. I also feel there is a lack of course offerings for continued education in the North so this could be great for my community.

Looking forward to getting to know you all over the next 10 weeks!

Hello! My name is Tamara Fuciarelli and I’m taking this degree to enhance my ability to teach adults using up to date methodology. I currently have a bit of teaching experience within post-secondary institutions but am hoping to better frame my teaching in some adult education theory and practice. I am also hoping to understand how I as an educator can build a more inclusive environment for the non-traditional learner as well as making my courses more open and learner directed. My major fear is that I find sometimes when I’m given to much theory, it all sounds great, and I end up leaving with not much idea of where I should be as an educator. I found that the one reading that mentioned how to not try and “include everything but instead be simple” is my main issue as an instructor and so im hoping to learn on how to better simply course design.

Im not overly creative but I would say that I would like to teach a “basic lab skills” workshop. I found that especially over covid, a majority of my students lacked basic lab skills and ability to complete basic procedures. Not that it was their fault, doing these things online is not the same as in practice. I would love to have a lab filled with various types of microscopes, tools, and materials for various procedures. I would ideally like to do a Monday-Friday workshop for maybe 2-3 hours each day. Students could form groups of 2-3 individuals. Each day I would have them attempt to answer a question related to a specific concept that required the use of various materials and methodologies. Everyday groups could rotate to different problems. This way groups can ask those that have already completed specific tasks for help. By the end students should hopefully have gained some skills relevant to lab work.

Hello Hello,

My name is Mamie and it’s nice to meet all of you! I currently teach and coordinate the Recreation and Leisure Services program at Conestoga College in Kitchener ON. I grew up as part of a farm family outside of Elora ON and still help in the summer when I can. I love cats, tea, reading, hanging out with my grandma and going on adventures with my partner in crime Jordan. I have recently taken up roller skating, perhaps a mid-life crisis, but it is so much fun and great exercise!

My expectations for this course are to learn some additional facilitation techniques to become a better educator for students. I would say my fear is keeping up and perhaps understanding everything.

My fantasy facilitation would be to run a series of workshops on accessible recreation environments (pools, parks, trails, arenas, fields, passive open spaces). As cost and location are no object, different workshops would be held at various locations around the world that are examples of excellence in accessible recreation environments. We would tour and have panelists from the selected location who would share with us things like the design, how the place is run, maintained and used to ensure it is as accessible for as many people as possible.

I am grateful to share this land with three sovereign First Nations: Chippewas of the Thames, the Oneida Nation of the Thames, and the Munsee-Delaware.

I currently work as a Learning Consultant for a large Canadian Wealth firm. I help my business partners identify opportunities for sales enablement through customized learning projects. My team and I manage curriculum builds from tactics and design to delivery and measurement.

I'm here at Brock with you because l needed a formal education in training; my experience comes from years in the field as a corporate subject matter expert and field trainer. Being a "person who knows" evolved into being a "person who teaches" in the blink of an eye. I recognize that to do this well, I need more of a background in adult learning than I have cobbled together with workshops and short courses.

My goal in this course (and in this certificate journey) is to learn how to facilitate in a way that makes my tedious expertise easier to understand. My team is a bunch of math and money geeks, and I would like us to be more progressive in how we teach so we honour all learning styles and create more meaningful and rewarding in-class experiences.

PART 2

My fantasy facilitation would be a series that uncovers the keys to financial literacy for marginalized communities. As you've generously given me an unlimited budget, I would create a curriculum that would be trained through "learning leaders" nationwide. I would find the best teachers and give them the tools and curriculum to instruct on general banking, savings and compound interest, building credit, budgeting, and personal risk assessment modelling. We would be accountable to no investment house and take no sponsorship, acting as an impartial body of volunteers.

I would organize and encourage learning leaders so they could connect with local libraries, newcomers clubs, ESL classrooms, and any grassroots local community venues they could find to ensure that anyone who would benefit from access to this information could have it (and the advice they need to execute it in their lives) taught live, for free, no strings attached.

I look forward to getting to know all of you over the following weeks!

Hi hello,

My name is Bhaven and nice to e-meet all of you.

Part 1

Why I'm taking the degree involves careers advancement. I am currently a paramedic in southern Ontario, and have spent the last decade in the career. More recently I have moved over to training, teaching, recruitment and hiring and I am taking this degree to be able to take the next steps in my career. While not necessary, the ability to have something on paper in the form of a degree helps paramedic instructors (so does charisma, but there is no degree for that). My hopes are the gain some confidence and abilities to create material myself rather than simply focus on just teaching it with random tangents. My expectation is largely just an idea of how to approach content and best present it.

Part 2

My fantasy course to facilitate would be something involving astronomy. While not something I have been able to do as often as I would like, amateur astrophotography and general star gazing and space themed courses caught my interest during my first go through university and I completed a minor in astrophysics. Space, the vastness and the sheer magnitude of scale required to understand the cosmos is enthralling. It would include night time adventures with telescopes, with no cost in mind, access to the James Webb Space Telescope or any observatories would be a dream. Including researchers, specialists and astronauts in the field to discuss and explain what the lights mean, the scale of time, scale of distance and experiences in space travel.

I've attached a picture of my family - my Sam is a little camera shy but 3 out of 4 kids looking isn't bad! We're a blended family and love going on adventures together. Fun fact - the two littles are both called Sam which I think is hilarious.
I'm taking this degree because I'd like to become a staff trainer in my current department. I hope to learn some excellent facilitation skills and become a lot more confident with presenting in front of people. Getting up in front of a room of people is very intimidating to me.

My fantasy facilitation would be to have a big teaching kitchen and teach kids or adults to bake. I absolutely love baking and use it as an excuse to procrastinate as often as possible. Feeding people delicious treats is my love language and makes me feel great. My course would start with the basics like chocolate chip cookies or brownies, but once everyone got some experience, we would move on to more fun and challenging projects. The final exam would be to bake the perfect cheesecake.

I'm looking forward to a fun and very busy semester!

Hello!

My name is Juliana – nice to virtually meet y’all! I reside in Mississauga, ON – a stone’s throw away from Square One to put me on the map. I currently work in HR in an IT company and am in the process of transferring from working at home in an IT setting to working in the office in a new organization that is in manufacturing! I am currently taking my Bachelors in Adult Education to complete my education/training (and potentially move on to my master’s in education) – fun fact, this is my second degree from Brock (Go Badgers!). I have also completed a Post-Graduate Certificate in Human Resources from Humber College along with a recruiter’s designation, so please feel free to connect with me about anything HR related! I am so excited to be back and learning – I love learning and expanding my knowledge and overall wellbeing and want to push that out to the employees I support as well. I expect to become a better person when I complete this course – and hearing and looking at the answers from everyone’s introductions along with Dr. Sharmaine’s support, I think we will do absolutely fabulous! My passion is people – and I want to ensure that I support you and vice versa.

Part 2:

My fantasy facilitation would be something with history—I love learning about Canadian history and overall understanding of how we became a country. Though I am proud to be living in a beautiful and vastly unique lands with different though processes, beliefs, and values, I think we need to continue to work on and support the Indigenous groups and work on the 94 calls to action. I think I would like to do a retreat of some sort, showing people how things came to be and where important war heroes stood as they fought in battle.

Though I do facilitations on a weekly basis (thanks to HR onboarding and orientations for new hires), I am quite comfortable speaking in front of large groups, even though my height says otherwise. I can grab someone’s attention if I am passionate about the topic at hand.

I just graduated last year with my Honours in Child and Youth Studies and Linguistics (combined major). I took a 12 year break between years 3 & 4 to have children and raise my family and work, so it took a lot of courage to come back to school full time in person at 43! My original schooling/background is in Early Childhood Education and I am currently working part time contracts teaching at both Mohawk and Conestoga. I started teaching as being an 'expert in my field', but have learned so much during the process about actually teaching to adults! I quickly realized I would love some more formalized education to help me better prepare and enhance my teaching, so here I am! I would love a full time contract, and feel this course may help give me an edge for that goal as well.

My dream facilitation would be combining my love for travel and new experiences with teaching. I would love to facilitate a group of students who come with me to another country and work in a child care setting in another country or on an island. My children and I did this for a day when we did a cruise. We went to an orphanage on an island and worked with the children and it was the most amazing experience. Meeting the educators/caregivers and seeing what they do every day and how they do things differently and sharing some of my knowledge as well was incredibly rewarding. I would love to share that with students who are learning and help ignite their passion.

Hello everyone, my name is Silvia and I'm from Woodbridge, ON. I've been a dental hygienist for over 10 years now, going onto my 11th year. I'm interested in taking the Brock degree for B.Ed because I want to build and grow on my dental hygiene clinical experience. I would love to help people in a different way, through education, I'm very social and love working with others. My hope is to continue to learn and grow into the best version of myself by dedicating time to learning the methodologies (through this degree) of what it takes to become a great example of an educator.

My fantasy facilitation would be to work in a university/college setting, teaching hands on in clinic with a mix of dental hygiene theory classes.
