In The Tempest, Prospero easily takes control of Ferdinand, enslaving him - because he has skill and knowledge of magic, and experience using it, while Ferdinand is just a prince, a birth-given status that holds no real power. This can be seen when Antonio stole the dukeship from Prospero. In his eyes, Prospero had abandoned his post, and hadn't been doing a good job anyways, so Antonio thought he was doing the right thing by stealing the throne. We can see this in The Tempest, when the three different groups are washed ashore. Ferdinand is heartbroken at the loss of his father, and surprised to be alive, believing himself to be the only survivor of the ship, whereas his father, Alonso, is also heartbroken, mourning the believed loss of his, while thinking only he and a few others had survived. The royals ended up backing down a bit after the sailors pointedly stated that they were saving their lives.
