John Lewis was born on February 21, 1940, in Troy, Alabama. He was educated in Nashville at the American Baptist Theological Institute and later in Fisk University. John Lewis grew up in the era of racial segregation, due to that he decide to commit to the civil rights movement from a young age.

John Lewis was the third of ten children of Willie Mae and Eddie Lewis. His parents were sharecroppers in Alabama. John Lewis married Lillian Miles in the sanctuary of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta on December 21, 1968.
