One thing that all of the colonists had in common was a belief that the New World brought a new beginning. For the Puritans it meant a life without discrimination. For the settlers of Virginia it meant establishing land for the the mighty British Empire. A beginning of westward expansion. These beliefs of having the freedom to do anything separate from the church made the different regions develop in many different ways.

Religion played a key role in New England's development. The goal of the Massachusetts bay Colony was to establish a religious commonwealth. Some people did not agree to this though and went south towards New York and Pennsylvania to establish their own colonies. This video below can get a bit ridiculous but the first two minutes really describe how New England became a religious-based system of people.

The Southern Colonies

The people that settled in Jamestown and in other Southern colonies settled there with the purpose to expand the British Empire. Therefore, when they discovered all of the cash crops that existed there they established trade routes and grew exponentially both structurally and economically. The southern colonies were very structured on labor rather than religion. The image below shows the economy of the south up until the civil war. As you can see, this region was heavily dependent on its exports.

Middle Colonies

The Middle colonies consisted of another group of religious, this time the Quakers. The QUakers established Pennsylvania. New York consisted of strong British loyalists. The middle colonies are a mix of both the south and New England. They had both religious settlers and political settlers. This is what makes this region very much developmentally potential. In other words, the middle colonies are in between the two extremes. This means that the potential to grow is far greater. The middle colonies, being the middle ground, was able to grow rapidly and we can see that today with New York and Philadelphia.
