Everyone is used to think that Amanda is bad character. She want to control everything and everyone, she still care about her children even they are not children anymore but reality is she just want to prevent each of her children to have a lonely and unsuccessful life like her own. She wants a nice husband for her daughter who will care about her all her life, not like Amanda's husband. She wants a successful career for her son, who eventually (i guess because she give too much custody) want to escape the reality. She made this consequences by herself, so it's all because her in most cases. Maybe she understand it and want to change everything.
Her life enough boring and depressive and she doesn't want same boring and depressive life for her children. So she trying her best to adjust good (for her standards) life for Tom and Laura. She know that Laura is very shy and quiet girl and her chance for success with personality like that is very low. So much better if Laura will have good husband instead of good successful life. She does that to get her children have a good life and she wants only the best for them but she misses understand them. They are quite different from their mom so Amanda can not get it. I believe, however, Laura has a possibility to overcome those obstacles. One of the scene shows that, "The dress is colored and designed by memory."(51) Also this quote shows that, "the arrangement of Laura's hair is changed"(51) These two quotes represents that Laura wore a dress that related to Laura and Amanda's memory, and we can know that her hair brushed. Some people might think that Laura doesn't want to meet gentlemen caller or somebody because she is shy. But, in my opinion, I felt it shows that Laura tried to change and start new life by do something new. From this quote, Amanda said that, "This is the prettiest you will be!"(52) It shows that her mother even said "pretty" to Laura, which means that she changed. it can also means Laura's future. Also, when Laura talked with her mom or brother, she actually expressed and received her opinion with less shyness.
From scene two, "I just went walking", which is when Laura and Amanda talked about Laura's school issue.(14) Laura strongly argued her thought.  I think these all quote and story represents her possibility that can overcome her weak personality. Also I have a question for Laura. To be honest, do you still like Jim? Or are you pretending you don't like Jim even though you still feel love? I'd like to ask this question because I am sort of confused when I realized that your feeling for Jim is changed from past years. When I focused on Laura's personality, I felt that she is kind of like Neville in Harry Potter. Some people might not know who he is, but he is one of the character who fought with Voldemort. Actually, he was terribly shy person in Hogwarts. Some people didn't care about him, even ignored. But the story is changed. Especially, in the last part of Harry Potter, Neville was one of the person who expressed opinion to Voldemort. Also he tried to kill Voldemort by used some weapon. In this way, I believe that Laura is almost same as Neville.
