To overcome this sadness Prophet Muhammed [PBUH] used to pray to Allah, do his daily work, read Quran when he read Quran he felt peace to heart, kept faith in Allah and kept giving knowledge to other people so he would be busy. And though his journey was sad he still did not give up. During this time Prophet Muhammad {PBUH} prayed and made so many duas to overcome his sadness and he made his iman strong.

This teaches us that we should believe in Allah no matter what and also teaches us that we should not be sad for moral than three days. If we are sad for more than three days that means Shaitaan is making you sad.

The Guidance of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) in Dealing with Sorrow

Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) gave deep, practical, and compassionate guidance on how to deal with sorrow, sadness, and hardship. His teachings show that feeling sorrow is part of being human, but Islam provides healthy ways to cope with it through faith, patience, and positive action.

1. Sorrow Is Natural and Allowed

Islam does not deny human emotions. The Prophet (ﷺ) himself felt deep sorrow at different times in his life. When his son Ibrahim passed away, he cried and said:

“The eyes shed tears and the heart feels grief, but we only say what pleases our Lord.”

This shows that feeling sad or crying is not a weakness. What matters is how a person responds—without losing faith or turning to harmful behavior.

2. Turning to Allah Through Duʿāʾ (Supplication)

One of the strongest teachings of the Prophet (ﷺ) is to turn to Allah when feeling sorrow. He taught specific supplications to ease sadness and anxiety. One famous duʿāʾ is:

“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and grief, from weakness and laziness, from miserliness and cowardice, and from being overcome by debt and oppression.”

This teaches Muslims to talk to Allah openly, asking for comfort, strength, and relief.

3. Patience (Ṣabr) Brings Reward

The Prophet (ﷺ) emphasized ṣabr (patience) during sorrow. He taught that every hardship carries reward when faced with patience and trust in Allah. He said that even pain, sadness, or worry removes sins when a believer remains patient.

This guidance helps Muslims see sorrow not as meaningless, but as a test that can bring spiritual growth.

4. Trusting Allah’s Wisdom (Tawakkul)

Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) taught that Allah is Most Wise and Most Merciful, even when people do not understand why something painful happens. Trusting Allah (tawakkul) helps reduce sorrow because a believer knows that Allah never does injustice and that relief will come at the right time.

5. Remembering That Hardship Is Temporary

The Prophet (ﷺ) reminded people that this life is temporary, and that true and lasting happiness is in the Hereafter. This perspective helps believers cope with sorrow by remembering that pain does not last forever, and that Allah promises relief after hardship.

6. Seeking Support and Being Kind to Others

The Prophet (ﷺ) encouraged community, kindness, and helping others, even when one is sad. Helping others can soften one’s own sorrow and bring peace to the heart. He was always gentle, comforting people who were grieving or struggling.

7. Avoiding Despair

The Prophet (ﷺ) strongly warned against despair and losing hope in Allah’s mercy. He taught that no matter how deep the sorrow, Allah’s mercy is greater, and hope should never be lost.

Conclusion

The guidance of Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) in dealing with sorrow is balanced and compassionate. He taught that sorrow is natural, but healing comes through faith, patience, prayer, trust in Allah, and hope. His teachings remind Muslims that they are never alone in their pain and that Allah is always near, listening and caring.

From ⚡️Ahmed Essa Mohammed ⚡️ 4A

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was no stranger to sorrow; he experienced the loss of his parents, his wife Khadijah, and all of his children except Fatima during his lifetime. His guidance offers a beautiful balance between honoring human emotion and maintaining spiritual resilience.

His approach can be summarized into several key principles:

1. Validating Human Emotion

The Prophet (PBUH) taught that feeling sadness and crying are natural and are signs of a "merciful heart."1 He did not encourage "bottling up" emotions.2

+1

The Example of Ibrahim: When his infant son Ibrahim passed away, the Prophet (PBUH) wept.3 When questioned by his companions, he said:

"The eyes shed tears and the heart grieves, but we do not say except what pleases our Lord."4 (Sahih Bukhari)

The Boundary: He distinguished between natural grief and "the wailing of Shaytan"—which includes screaming, tearing clothes, or questioning Allah’s wisdom in a way that suggests injustice.5

2. Spiritual Remedies and Supplications

The Prophet (PBUH) provided specific words to help ground the heart when it feels overwhelmed.6

Istirja (The Anchor): Reciting Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un (To Allah we belong and to Him we return).7 This reminds us that our origin and destination are beyond this temporary world.8

+1

The Dua of Distress: He frequently used this prayer to seek refuge from the "weight" of sorrow:

"O Allah, I seek refuge in You from anxiety and sorrow, from weakness and laziness, from miserliness and cowardice..." (Sahih Bukhari)9

The Dua of Ibn Mas’ud: He taught that if a person says a specific long prayer (asking Allah to make the Quran the "spring of my heart" and "the banisher of my sadness"), Allah will replace their sorrow with joy.10

3. Practical Steps for Healing

The Sunnah emphasizes action alongside prayer to prevent grief from turning into total isolation:

Prayer (Salah): Whenever a matter grieved the Prophet (PBUH), he would immediately resort to prayer to find a direct connection with Allah.11

Community Support (Ta'ziyah): He encouraged the community to cook for the grieving family (as he did for the family of Ja’far) and to offer words of comfort, ensuring the bereaved do not feel alone.

Taqdeer (Acceptance of Decree):12 He taught that everything happens for a reason. Realizing that Allah is Al-Hakim (The Most Wise) helps a believer trust that even in pain, there is a hidden mercy or an expiation of sins.

4. Hope in Reconnection

The Prophet (PBUH) often consoled the grieving by shifting their focus to the afterlife. He reminded his companions that those who lose loved ones and remain patient will be reunited with them in Jannah (Paradise), where there is no more sorrow.
