Proto Restoration Construction has been serving residents of New York City for nearly 30 years. In addition to performing facade renovations on individual residences, the company has undertaken some extremely large apartment complex and commercial restoration projects. In 1993, the City of New York tapped Proto Restoration Construction to restore the Unisphere to its original pristine condition.

An art structure located in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, the Unisphere was the centerpiece of the New York World's Fair of 1964-1965. Designed to embody the theme of Peace Through Understanding, this monument also served as the visual logo of the 1964-1965 World's Fair.

The Unisphere is the product of noted landscape architect Gilmore D. Clarke. Mr. Clarke is also responsible for designing the geometric, Beaux Arts-inspired blueprint of Flushing Meadows Park, which, in turn, informed the layout of both the 1964-1965 World's Fair and the earlier 1939-1940 World's Fair.

Towering 140 feet, the Unisphere is comprised of stainless steel that is covered with images of the Earth’s continents and encircled by three giant rings. These rings represent the first manmade satellites, which began orbiting the Earth in the late 1950s. The Unisphere monument also incorporates a dramatic circular reflecting pool with 20-foot-high water fountains.

New York City Fire Escapes

For the last 28 years, Proto Restoration Construction has provided New York City with exterior, interior, and restoration construction services. Among its many specialties, Proto Restoration Construction is an expert in fire escape restoration.

Fire escapes are iron staircases bolted to the exterior of buildings throughout New York City. Due to a concern for public safety, fire escapes began to appear in New York City in the middle of the 19th century. It was in 1860 that the city’s Department of Buildings began to require that building owners provide an escape route from their properties, and the exterior fire escape was an affordable way to fulfill this obligation.

The first patent awarded to a fire escape design went to Anna Connelly in 1887. Her steel staircase attached to the exterior of the building was widely adopted by builders who saw it as an easy addition or retrofit that would not require internal restructuring.

Due to modern safety concerns, in 1968, New York City passed a law prohibiting the installation of fire escapes on new buildings. Instead, sprinkler systems and interior stairwells for egress would provide fire safety.
