Describe the scene before and after the strong wind and hailstones.

SCENE BEFORE:
Just as Lencho had predicted, big drops of big rain drops began to fall. Huge mountains of clouds approached from the north-east. He went out to feel the pleasure of it. He considered the big drops to ten cent pieces and the little ones to five.
SCENE AFTER:
The pleasant rain soon turned into a hailstorm. The hail rained for an hour on the house, the garden, the hillside, the cornfield, and on the whole valley. No leaf remained on the trees. The flowers were gone from the plants. The corn was totally destroyed. The field was white as if covered with salt. Lencho's soul was filled with sadness.

WHAT MADE THE POSTMASTER COME FORWARD TO HELP LENCHO? HOW DID HE MANAGE TO ARRANGE THE MONEY?

The postmaster laughed when he saw a letter addressed to God. But he became serious and commented the correspondence with God. Moved by such a faith, the postmaster started to read the letter. He understood that Lencho deserved more than goodwill, ink and paper. He seeked the help of his post office employees, and several of his friends for collecting that huge sum. He also contributed a part of his salary as a wonderful act of charity. Thus, his firm resolution to help the poor farmer for his immense faith in God made him collect 70 pesos.

CHARACTER SKETCH ON THE POSTMASTER:

The postmaster is an amiable person. He is friendly and pleasant in nature. His laughing at the initial stage of seeing the letter portrays him as a normal person like many other. But his decision to help Lencho highlights his real character. He is a gem of a person who loves watching others being happy. He is a humble, simple and down to earth. He doesn't have pride. He requests the known people to give charity. Even at the end of the chapter when Lencho addresses the post office employees as a bunch of crooks, the postmaster is very passive. Indeed he is not angry on Lencho but moved by his incredible faith in God.
