How wrong I was. When I started to hear that there would be lockdowns, curfews, and food shortages, I could believe it. During this time period, schools closed down, and I was quite happy that we were going to have a long break. After starting online school, I didn’t particularly like it but I figured that it was temporary so I was fine. Some time passed and I was notified that this would be for the rest of the year. I was quite unhappy at this announcement, but at least there weren’t going to be any finals. Time started to pass. After this, not much of anything happened for quite a while. Hours, days, weeks and months started to pass. I started to feel isolated and lonely from not having to leave my house for over a month. I then realized how much I missed going to school. This realization surprised me, since I had never previously imagined the thought of missing school. Unfortunately, I can not go to see any of my friends due to social distancing and lock downs.

My neighborhood, which usually doesn’t have too many people walking around, became very busy. Whenever I looked out my window, I saw at least five people walking in front of my house at almost any given time. I was surprised that it took a global pandemic to bring people together. This wasn’t the only thing. When stores were still open, I was at a Target. As I looked around, I saw that many of the shelves were empty and that there was no toilet paper or paper towels. When I looked at the news, I saw that many states were planning to reopen their economies and end their lockdowns. I thought that this was crazy. The infection rate is still increasing, while not as fast, reopening businesses and the economy would reverse the slowing of the curve and cause even more people to get infected. Unfortunately, this, for many people, is a much needed option so that they can return to work and earn money since this country does not have nationwide paid leave. Also, I saw that many people were beginning to think that Covid-19 was from a laboratory in China that was not contained.

First of all, the virus will probably linger for years until a vaccine or treatment is created and widely dispersed. Also, the economic impact will last for a long time. The economy had record losses during this event, with Dow dropping 10,000 points, which is much more than 2008. Also, the unemployment system. Many think that the unemployed can just get their previous jobs back, but it is more complicated. First of all, many of the businesses, mainly small, that they lost their jobs from, would have ceased to exist after the lockdowns ended. This will seriously disrupt one of the links in the economic cycle. This is because many who have lost their jobs will have no money or be in debt. They will then be unable to buy anything, which will cause further damage to the economy for years to come. The thing is, many european countries handled this even in a much better fashion. They funded businesses to pay their customers, and also helped them with rent and other expenses, which gives the unemployed a place to go back to. This reflects on the effectiveness of the US government, which is shown to have been subpar in this situation.
