The Taming Scene

I think in all of the different interpretations we watched during the taming scenes the role of obedience showed through when trying to get in the relationship they wanted. Katherine in Taming of the Shrew realized she was falling in love with Petruccio but only started to “tame” or become more calm when he started doing it in ways that was respectful. Petruccio and Patrick both put in a lot of work to get the woman they strived for, whatever they could by the end. Patrick started to fall for Kat, told her his true feelings, why he did what he did, and that he was sorry. He became obedient towards her. He told her exactly what she wanted to hear, that he stopped smoking, learned to like the same things she did, and brought her out of her shell. Both men changed themselves and the woman they liked for the better.

Theme-Role of Obedience in a relationship AND stereotypes

I think one main point they come across a lot is stereotypes and role of obedience in a relationship. People may seem like they are somebody else until you get to know them and learn their true self. For example, in ten things I hate about you just about all the main characters had a stereotype about that that wasn’t quite true. Bianca comes off as the stuck up popular girl, that wants Joey just because of her popularness but later she ends up being a very nice girl and is dating the geek who is also very charming. Another example is Patrick, his stereotype is a guy that's too good for everyone, doesn’t care what people think, and a druggy. He starts to change himself and do what Kat would want him to do so he can get her, which shows obedience in a relationship. After being bribed into trying to take out Kat for money he realizes how amazing of a person she is and starts to fall for her, and becomes this charming, sweet, innocent guy you would have never thought was there. Stereotyping womens roles occurs in the Taming of the Shrew. Katherine is not portrayed as a push over at all, but later she becomes the “obedient” wife. Petruccio comes to the realization he is able to tame her with his respect.

In this interpretation roles are being switched but it still has the main plot. This removes a main stereotype of guys being the ones always trying to win over the girl. This also changes perspective on the role of obedience in a relationship. It has you questioning if there is a dominant person in the relationship or if they are equal.

Bianca, Kats older sister has been told by their father Walter Bianca is not allowed to date unless Kat does first. Kat is a carefree and unsociable girl, the last thing on her mind is dating someone. After Kats sister Bianca finds a guy she is desperate to go out with she bribes Kat to take out a guy by paying her. At first Kat is totally against the idea, her sister raises the price more and begs her and Kat decides she will at least try. Kat notices this guy in her class, Patrick, he seemed like a pushover druggy but easy to get so she went for him. He wasn't so easy, but after a while of getting to know each other he agreed to hang out with her or go on a date after school. As the story went on Kat started to fall for this guy, she felt stupid, scared, and embarrassed all at the same time. She knew she had to tell him the truth of why she went for him. Patrick felt terrible about himself, but came off as though he didn't care but he couldn't be with her. Kat knew there was something there so she tried to win him back over with the help of her sister.
