The bacteria can commonly be found on the sin and sinuses of people but when under the skin can cause infection. Abscesses that are suspected staph are commonly treated with  penicillin. MRSA strains are resistant to penicillin and other ß-lactam agents. While the observance of a ß-lactam agents failing to treat an abscess can diagnose MRSA cultures can also be taken and tested for drug resistance.
