Why were these roads made the way they are?

These roads were one of the key reasons Rome became so powerful. They offered an easy way to travel, so troops and supplies could get from one place to another in a speedy matter. This gave them an edge on their enemies who had to walk on the open countryside, which considerably slowed them down. A Roman army could cover a whopping 20 miles in just one day. You'll be riding horses over this long distance and learn about the fastening story behind the roads or on the roads.

Every day, millions of people use the roadways that wind up and down the hilly mountainside of Rome. They cut through mountains, go over hills and lakes, and almost always in a straight line. This makes for an amazing experience because it basically gives a straight path through Rome, the perfect tourist spot. We include a complimentary chariot ride with every flight booked so that you can experience what it was like traveling through the countryside like the Romans did.

These roadways measured between 3.6 feet and more than 23 feet wide. They were created in a almost ruler straight line, and this was so they could get to their destination as fast as possible. On some occasions, the roads were carved 9 feet into the ground to get around obstacles. Tunnels and bridges were also used.
