INTRODUCTION: People hold different views about how taxpayers’ money should be spent sensibly. Whilst many argue that governments should subsidise artists and arts organisations, my view is that this money should be spent to improve health services and school standards.

There are several advantages of funding the arts. Firstly, institutions such as museums and theatres are central to traditional values and cultural identity. Indeed, there is an intimate link between songs, poems and plays, for example, and the history and broader culture of a nation.

Secondly, frequent exposure to paintings or animated movies, for example, can develop a child’s imagination. Finally, listening to a song is one of the best ways to reduce stress levels. In that sense, our lives would be less interesting and meaningful without the arts.

In my view, however, the demand for health and education services is so great that any additional funding for the arts should be axed. Instead, greater provision of services such as ambulances and hospital beds should be targeted at those in need, particularly those from a disadvantaged background. Additionally, across the world there are many schools with leaking roofs and cramped classrooms that would benefit from an upgrade. Even more seriously, many children are starting work at too young an age at the expense of their educational opportunities. Therefore, it seems wrong to lavish cash on arts organisations that offer fewer practical and immediate benefits.

In conclusion, although there are several reasons for funding the arts, I believe that the money could be better allocated to medical services and education that would benefit more people in greater need.
