The tone of the poem is depressing and filled with grief. The poem is not ironic because the words in the poem fit well with the poem's tone. Some lines that hint the poem is depressing is "my life closed twice before its close" and "so huge, so hopeless to conceive"

6. What is the theme (central idea) of this poem? Can you state it in a single sentence? Elaborate on your idea.

The theme of the poem is that grief is a stage everyone will eventually go through, but it takes a long time to heal from the loss you are grieving. In this poem, the author is grieving the loss of the people she felt affectionate with, including two of her friends and her parents. A quote from the speaker was, "So huge, so hopeless to conceive". This showed how badly the losses affected her through the poem's theme.

2.What heavily connotative words are used? What words have unusual or special meanings? Are any words or phrases repeated? If so, why? Which words do you need to look up?

The connotative words that were unusual when the speaker said "So huge, so hopeless to conceive(means pregnant)" that she doesn't want or expect her child to perish just like her loved ones since she keeps thinking of giving up. Close and twice keeps repeating, indicating between her questions of keep moving forward and suffer more or to die to escape her suffering.

4. What figures of speech are used? How do they contribute to the tone and meaning of the poem?

There were some metaphors like for example "Parting is all we know of heaven And all need of hell". It helps contribute that the speaker was in grief and depression kept telling herself whether to keep living or to die. Also, it helps explain near the end of the poem that heaven and hell represent the judgment of someone's sins and experiences so it's possible it might be the speaker's own judgment or questioning death it self.

3. What images does the poet use? How do the images relate to one another? Do these images form a unified pattern (a motif) throughout the poem?

The poet uses the imagery of heaven and hell, "Parting is all we know of heaven, and all we need of hell" . This gives the reader an image of death and letting go of those who are close to us, it helps the reader to imagine and feel with the speaker, who has gone through death twice before. Imagery of hopelessness "so huge, so hopeless to conceive" , lives closing, and immortality which all pertain to death.

8. How important is the contribution of form, such as rhyme scheme and line arrangement? How does form influence the overall effect of the poem?

The simplicity of this poem makes it vague, however the theme of grief and loss is clear. The simple rhymes and structure leave the poem up to interpretation and give it a smooth and flowing rhythm. Rhymes such as "As these that twice befell. Parting is all we know of heaven, And all we need of hell." Both give structure and flow to for the reader to make the poem enjoyable and hard hitting.
