<title>UEA ScreenwritingStevek - Treatment 1 Grania and Owen are leaders of the Cantiac clan of SE Britain, great warriors both. Their son Diarmid is at the centre of the story. He resents his parents` power as he approaches his adult rituals, yet also worries that he will not be a good warrior, like his friends Leary and Derdru. He is in love with Derdru but holds back as he believes she is hooked on Leary and also through innate shyness. When news comes that the Romans will invade, led by Caesar, the young friends try to be helpful. Before they can start, Grania and Owen decide the time is right for them to learn sailing. At sea their small boats are spotted and chased by a Roman galley. Escaping across the Great Marsh, the he local tribe come to the rescue but it is a close call. Winter is ending so food is scarce and they decide a hunt will be helpful. As the Druid Aedan has taught them, they pray for forgiveness from the Great Goddess for the life taken but hunting out of season breaks clan law, so they are punished. After lessons with Aedan they are sent to discover the mood of other clans. It is feared some may favour Roman rule. Diarmid`s friend Hern likes boasting about great feats he will achieve. He is becoming a nuisance. Colma missed his adult rituals through illness. His original friends have moved on, so he feels unhappy and runs away. Diarmid is paired with Hern . They and across the Thamesa to the Trinovans, who live under the harsh rule of Coel. A man is killed for trying to run away. Diarmid thinks he caught sight of someone who looked like Colma. Coel says he want an alliance with the Cantiacs, to stop the Roman invasion. Unknown to Diarmid, Hern is tortured to make him spy for Coel. Diarmid finds a Roman coin , so knows Coel has been lying and knows something has frightened Hern. Mathol is introduced, with stories about the wonders of Rome. Diarmid responds with tall tales about Coel`s Western neighbour, Cassivel of the Catuvellans, which please Coel greatly and he sends the two Cantiacs home. Diarmid shows his Roman coin to Grania and Aedan and Derdru, a cunning stalker, is set to spy on Hern. Wimmix the Gaul appears and an alliance is formed against the Romans. After discussions about battle and getting the wild Saxona to attack the Romans, there is a feast and dancing. Derdru sees Mathol arrive with money for Hern. Grania takes Diarmid to the Great Gathering of clans at Stonehenge, where she hopes they will join the struggle. Support is assured. She tricks Coel into showing his hand and persuades the arrogant Cassivel of the Catuvellans to attack him. Back home, Grania tells Hern she has an alliance with Coel. Brigid arrives. Her tribe, the Regnees will help, except with fighting. She stroppy, aggressive and does not fit in. On a hunting trip for the Harvest Feast, Diarmid and his friends find Colma, almost dead from hunger and exhaustion. They build a hide for him and worry about how to break the news. They decide to try Aedan, the Druid. Though he is intimidating, he is very calm. It will soon be time the adult ritual, so Aedan starts a course of instruction. It shocks them that he knows about Colma and is very pleased with them. He says they must keep apart from the rest, in case they accidentally give anything away. They turn to thank him but he has vanished. When the rituals are done, they will each know their father`s name. Colma still unhappy but as he wanders through the early fog to slump down against a tree, he sees Mathol and Hern meet again. Winter comes. Mathol is grouch about being followed. He and Hern have a row. The Brigid appears, which is a grave shock. Mathol scares her with a murderous look and they both flee in opposite direction. Hern chases Mathol, but he won`t agree to let him leave too, only telling him to kill Brigid. Alarmed, Hern stabs Mathol, partly to get himself off the hook. Krantec, lurking as protection for Mathol, now also runs for it while Hern drags Mathol`s body back as a trophy. His triumph is short-lived. Aedan, Grania and Owen tell him that a spy cannot be the tribe, except as a prisoner . He must keep up his pretence with the Trinovans. If he puts a foot wrong, Coel will learn of his treachery. But Colma has been set free, with honour. Krantec returns to take Mathol`s place. His real hope is that the Romans will put an end to Coel`s dominance, but fears they might cut him down too. He wants escape to Rome but is aware that going with Hern might be walking into a trap. Hern fears that Krantec saw him kill Mathol. He decides to stick to the story Owen has prepared; Mathol tried to squeeze money out of him, under the threat of blowing his cover to Owen. Krantec thinks the knowledge Hern shared with him about the Regnees was genuine. It might be worth the risk of going with him, so starts teaching him Latin. Owen and Grania agree to watch Hern even more closely. They don`t believe his version of the meeting. Owen tells Grania he wants to take Leary, Diarmid, Finn and Derdru to the battle in Gaul. She is afraid they won`t come back. He goes to Gaul with Leary and Diarmid and learns the battle-plan. FInn is injured falling out of a tree. He will not be able to go to Gaul. Instruction continues with Aedan in stalking, running, fighting with staves, escape and evasion. Hern tends the pigs, desperate for Krantec`s next visit. He is delighted at the chance to run away. Diarmid learns that Owen is his father, which dismays him. Warriors from other tribes arrive, ready for Gaul. So does Wimmix, who will guide them to the gathering-place there. Before they set off, Aedan teaches Leary, Derdru and Diarmid the spell for invisibility with stern warnings that it can only be used in serious situations and only for one day, sunset to sunset. Among sand-dunes on Regnee land the runaways help a Gaul struggling to land his boat in rough sea. He agrees to sail them over. When they reach Gaul, the man leads them to the Romans. Coel is already there. Coel wants to see them buried alive, or possibly fed to wild animals for public sport, saying they can`t be trusted. When the Romans ask them how the land lies in “Britannia” as they call it, their answers are held to be true. Rather than being killed, they are will be sold as slaves. If they work hard, may get their freedom. Hern starts weeping . Krantec warns him that is not the way to behave. He must learn Latin quickly, suffer punishment bravely, praise the Empire and work hard. Otherwise he might find himself fighting for his life in the Circus Maximus beckons. The sea voyage to Rome is horrible. On arrival, Hern is sold to a very savage and bad-tempered man. In Gaul, the Celtic Army is slaughtered. The Roman Army come marching up the Rona valley, unstoppable. Diarmid and Leary fight bravely defending the baggage- wagons. Diarmid sees Owen fall in battle and Derdu escaping. Leary is killed by a spear. A general on a white horse sits watching them. In the morning, chained to the other captives, Diarmid enters a fort and and sees a legion decimated. One in ten is cut down, it is said for cowardice. Over the Alps and down to Rome they march for many days. The buildings in Rome loom above them in a most intimidating way. The prison stinks and the jailer goads them cruelly. But when they are taken by cart to the slave-auction, DIarmid is taken away before it starts by a terrifying, burly legionary. Pushed and pr odded across the city to a magnificent villa and into a cool marble room, the General is waiting. Diarmid will be trained as a Citizen by a another slave, a Greek philosopher, because he showed courage in the battle. In a tiny, stuffy room at the top of the house, he swears he will return home, somehow. </title>
