1. Columbus' letter to Isabella and Ferdinand was mostly comprised of the promises and fruits of the new land. He spoke about the new people he encountered and how he has begun to communicate with them, which included forcing them to obey him. He finished his letter by stating that his voyage was not his accomplishment but a gift from God to the people.

1.) In Columbus's letter to the King and Queen of Spain he talked about the different islands he has "discovered". While talking about the different islands he has discovered, he also talked about how he has already enslaved the some of the Taino people hoping that they will soon learn Spanish. Along with talking about the islands he stole and the people he enslaved, he talked about how the men he was leaving on the island will be well cared for and have all the supplies they need, even though in the end they did not have enough for them to survive.

2.) The reason Columbus describes the island of Espanola in this way i think is to tell the king and queen what a good job he has done so far. I say this because he talks about the beautiful landscape and water, but at the end of this paragraph he talks about the riches and the gold he has found there. He also my be saying these different in this way because he has never experienced anything like this before.

3.) He describes the indigenous people in way that makes me slightly uncomfortable. He talks about enslaving them and how he wants them to try to learn his language. He also says that they bowed down to him like he was a god, but in different accounts from the Native American's point of view it says almost the exact opposite.

4.) My personal opinion is that we should never celebrate Columbus day, because he murdered

1. In his letters he informs The king and queen that he has arrived in India and has claimed islands and the people on them. He makes it sound like he has found all of these amazing items but he has not. Also he is trying to make himself look better and trick the king and queen in to funding his next trip.
2. I think that he describes it like that because he wants them to think that he has really landed in India. Also it would make him look bad it he found a bad island. Also so that they would still fund him and give him money.
3. He said that they listened and respected them and treated them with kindness.

I think that we should celebrate Columbus Day because he was just doing his job and following his king and queen's wishes. Also I think that it is important to recognize the person who really started growing the America's. But at the same time I think that some of the things that he did were very wrong and that we should not celebrate those things.

1. Columbus' letter to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella details that he has found land and discovered many different types of foods. He details that he has claimed land and named several islands after them and other important figures. He explains how he arrives and takes several Indians by force as a way to learn their language and find a better way to communicate. He then goes on to ask the king and queen for assistance so he can expand ownership of the land.
2. Christopher Columbus describes the island in the way he does so Ferdinand and Isabella will found this new land appealing and almost like a dream world. He probably explains this land in a positive tone, so he can be granted extra money and the king and queen won't feel like they have been wasting money.
3. Columbus described the indigenous people as kind and unselfish. He said that they followed his orders and listened as well as respected him. He also said that they showed him bountiful amounts of affection.
4. I do not believe we should celebrate Columbus day. We are patronizing a man who did not treat others unlike him with respect that they deserved. He hurt and abused them profusely, yet he is recognized for things completely different. While I do believe it is important to remember and acknowledge Christopher Columbus, I do not believe that schools should be teaching of just Columbus' greatness. I believe that Columbus Day should be exchanged for a more inclusive and historically accurate holiday. If we don't patronize people who hurt others or commit dangerous crimes, we should do the same for Christopher Columbus.

1. Columbus first informs King Ferdinand and Isabella of his voyage and arrival to "India". He describes the land as mountainous and lush. He explains that he has not only conquered many islands, but the indigenous people for Spain. Lastly, he gloats about his achievements, and states he has done this all for the king and queen and the Christian faith.
2. I think he describes the island like that in order to make sure the King and Queen knew he had found something worth their time and money.
3. He describes them them as easy to take advantage of. And he does take advantage of them, enslaving them, even after saying they had shown him kindness
4. No I do not think we should celebrate Columbus day. He was responsible for the murder and enslavement of almost an entire nation, and I think it says a lot about our country to celebrate him. He may have found our country but he also didn't know where he was. Personally, I am not fans of directionally challenged murderers but thats just me.

1. The letter written by Columbus and sent to Isabella and Ferdinand reminded me of a speech a running president would give. He explained his current state and feelings, and later continued to say his promises and ideas for this land. He is advertising his new land.
2. As he described Espanola, he spoke very highly of the land. It seemed like he exaggerated and enhanced its aspects. He overstates the land to gain the royals affection for the island as well as himself. He wants to impress the royals by creating a lavish world to their liking.
3. He describes the Tainos as if they are servants praising him. He talks as if the Tainos are willing to follow his orders and don't mind the abrupt demanding commands from him. He tells the royals that they will learn his ways of life and knowledge of the Spaniards.
4. I believe we should celebrate Columbus day. Although it's not a very lighthearted subject for some ethnicities and races, it proves an important idea. This holiday celebrates where I come from, along with millions of other American citizens. We need to appreciate the land we live in that was discovered by Columbus. We can focus on the day and age we are in, but we should still remember the past and never forget how we are standing here today.

He said something briefly about the Indians and how he took them by force. Lastly he says that he will bring gold, spices, cotton and many men back to Spain.
2. I think that Columbus describes the island Espanola in this way because he wanted to please Ferdinand and Isabella by naming the most beautiful island after Spain.
3. He describes the indigenous population in a way so that it seems like they did not mind being taken by force and made to learn their language. He describes them as friendly and he said that the greeted them with food and drinks. Columbus also makes it seem like the people like him.
4. I believe that we should celebrate Columbus day.

1. In Christopher Columbus's letter to Ferdinand and Isabella, he talks about his success in finding India. He assures them that everything is going smoothly, and that he has come across many islands. Columbus says that things like gold and copper will be brought back.
2. Columbus seems to describe Espanola the way he believes Ferdinand and Isabella would like to hear. I think he says it this way so they will be happy with him and he will have the opportunity to go back, especially since he left a third of his crew there.
3. Columbus describes the indigenous population as being extremely kind and welcoming. He also tells them that the people like him, which I find a little difficult to believe because he did take on of them by force and made him learn their language to be their personal tour guide.
4. I think that we should celebrate Columbus day. Even though Columbus definitely didn't treat the Native Americans how they should have been treated, he did find the Americas. So, I think Columbus day should be celebrated not because Columbus was a "great person, " but because he founded the place we live in today.
-Margaret

His discussion of the island Hispanola panders the bountiful land to an ear waiting to learn of its life supporting ability.

2. When Colombus refers to the Taino it's always offhanded, as if they are ready tools at his disposal.

Colombus, whether the moral and racial constraints were slackened during his time, now upon reflection was indisputably unfair and cruel in his actions. After, he tells how the people on the island believe the crew are descendants from the heavens, and treat them with a lot of respect. Lastly, he informs them of all the goods he will return with.

2. Christopher Columbus describes the island he named "Espanola" because he wants Ferdinand and Isabella to imagine this new world as magical and something they can be proud of and look forward to. He wants them to believe that the land he has discovered is worth their time and money, and that they should fund many other trips in the future.

3.

1. He's saying how beautiful it is and how different it is. He also says how great of a governor he has been and makes himself sound overall powerful.
2. So that the king and queen won't be disappointed when they when they hear how great it is. They will also want to fund more of his trips because Espanola was so beautiful and had lots to gain from it.
3. He says that the indigenous people think that he had descended from the heavens. He describes them as friendly toward him and his crew as they surrounded them with food and other goods. They made a great effort in welcoming these foreigners into their home not knowing the terrible suffering they were about to go through.
4. I think we need to have some sort of day where we celebrate the founding of our country but maybe not honor Columbus. He didn't even know it was a new land he thought it was India. He also treated the people that lived here horrifically and to honor someone of that doesn't seem right. However, like I said before I feel like we should have some sort of celebration for our country being founded just not honor or celebrate Columbus himself.

1. In Columbus's letter to Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella, he spoke with much excitement over the new land he had just discovered. Columbus describes the fruitful fields, the vast lands, the trees, the herbage, and all the different wildlife he has encountered. He also speaks of the native Indian people he has met on the island. Columbus says how he took one of the Indian people to help the crew find their way around the island.
2. Columbus described Espanola as being a beautiful, abundant, and very convenient. He also talks about how the Espanola is very different from Juana. Columbus is trying to show Isabella and Ferdinand how great the new world is and how good of a leader he is to get Isabella and Ferdinand to fund more trips for Columbus.
3. Columbus describes the indigenous population as being very nice, kind, hospitable, and very entertaining. He also says how helpful the natives are to him and his crew.
4. Letter to Tainos- Columbus didn't really discover the americas because it was already discovered. He also slaughtered and enslaved the indigenous people who were already living on the islands. So I don't think he should be celebrated but we should still celebrate the discovery of America.
-Charlotte R

I do not think we should celebrate Columbus Day, because he didn't discover the Americas, and enslaved the natives. There were already people on the island, but Columbus ignored that because he thought he was better than them and that they were essentially the equivalent of wild animals. He was very cruel to the natives as well and enslaved them. Even his own people thought he was terrible and problematic after awhile. We should not celebrate him for the awful things he's done especially since he didn't even discover the land.
-Cameron Tierney

Columbus Day? Guinevere

Yes, I believe we should celebrate Columbus day because Columbus may not have meant to discover America, but he did and he colonized it as if he had meant to discover it. He may not have been the best person to have been put in charge or to lead the people, but just because it was named after him, does not mean the day is completely about him. Many other explorers and sailors went with him and helped start the new land. We are also celebrating them on Columbus day. Though I do think that Columbus should not be praised because of how he treated the Native Americans, but more of used as an example of how others should be treated fairly. Because we see as history goes on there is conflict between the Americans and Indians which could have been avoided if he had treated them with respect.

1. In the beginning he was saying how beautiful and different it is from what he is used to. He also seems to be making himself sound bery powerful and better than anyone else.

2. I belive he chose to write it that way because it was obviously the best island that they had been to. He wanted to make it sound amazing to prove that he was doing a very good job.
3. He described them to be very kind, giving, and helpful. He also stated that the indiginnus people thought that he had decended from the heavens.
