Logic deals with the systematic oppression of people of color by encouraging people to turn away from violence and towards peaceful but resistant political action. The lyric "Don't burn down the mom and pop shop" refers to violent riots and protests that get out of hand when people start to destroy businesses and create chaos. He influences people not to fight fire, and for activists to not sink down to the level of racists and white supremacists by resorting to brutality and destruction. Instead in the line "Don't run from Trump, run against him", he tells people to take political action against the people in power who are encouraging these injustices against black people.

In Dear Martin, Manny's cousin Quan and his gang, the Black Jihad react to racism and violence with more violence. Members of the Black Jihad will do whatever it takes to protect themselves. When confronted by Officer Castillo, a police officer that was known, at least by Justyce, to be racist and extremely excessively agressive with young black men, Quan reacts by shooting him. Although he puts on a front of being emotionless and tough, we can see that he is defeated by people's racist attitudes attitudes towards and actions against him. Quan even says, "Why try to do right if people will always look at me and assume wrong?" which shows he has given up trying to do the right thing or advocate for change and has given in to becoming the stereotype people see him as

Central Theme: People Have Different Ways of Responding to and Rebelling against Racism and Oppression

This theme is important in Dear Martin because the author Nic Stone wrote this for young black teens to inspire and encourage them. The contrast of the ways Justyce and Quan deal with and react to racism provides an example of how you can let racism tear you down, or learn how to deal with it and not let it destroy you. After his "incident" with Officer Castillo and even after Manny's death, Justyce manages to not lose all hope and doesn't give in to resorting to violence and joining the gang. She wants to encourage people to respond to racism like Justyce and not like Quan.

BlacKkKlansman

In the movie, BlacKkKlansman, a black police officer and his partner sucessfully infiltrate the KKK in an attempt to expose and take them down. They front as white supremacists and use their position within their local chapter of the KKK to gain information and manage to foil a planned bombing. The way of rebellion against racism presented in this movie differs from that of Dear Martin and "America" in that it is much more radical and dangerous. They put their lives on the line and were in constant danger of being exposed themselves. It was also a much less accepted way of rebelling, which is obvious from the fact that all evidence of their mission was hidden from the public.

Compare/Contrast

Each of these three reactions to racism are much different. Logic's song contrasts BlacKkKlansman's racial apprach by encouraging a much more peaceful and more widely accepted way of fighting racism. It is also different from Dear Martin because Logic wants to end violence , whether it be against white or black people, and bring change that will end the oppression of all black people. Quan and the Black Jihad, on the other hand, respond to racism by doing whatever it takes to protect themselves. They have more or less given up on hoping that thing could possibly change and instead "do whatever it takes to stay at the top", which often includes violence.
The S.O.A.P.S part of "America" that connects to Dear Martin is the audience and the purpose. Both Nic Stone and Logic's works appeal to teens and young adult audiences, specifically young black people, because they are reaching out to people who are probably going experiencing the same injustices that are described in the book and the song. The purpose of the two is similar as well because they wrote them to inspire young black people who are being torn down by racism and oppression.
