Picture Composition Analysis (Static)

I chose this scene in the static composition because I was impressed by the images of the woman narrating and what she said. I chose it because I felt emotionally close to this scene.
The focus was on the close-up and positioning in the middle of the frame when interviewing the swimmer. When the image changed, there was a moving dolphin, this time at the same spot. The focus in both was that they were positioned right in the center of the frame. Unlike the woman, the dolphin was moving slowly. The only thing that distracted my attention was the tiny waves the dolphin made while swimming. Apart from that, my eye was always in the middle.
The dolphin swung through the sea and my eyes followed him vertically because I was curious to see what would happen to the dolphin at last. On the one hand, the swimmer was telling that she was living at that time. I was eagerly anticipating what he would say, so I focused on his mouth. The woman started to cry and when she put her hand to her face, my attention shifted towards her, she explained how the dolphin was thrown in the sea, and when I saw the dolphin again, I noticed that there were similar movements. So there were repetitive movements.

I chose this scene because the scene begins serenity, and we see savagery at the end. The beginning and end of the scene is clear. At the beginning of the Sequence, we see dolphins roaming freely on the Greek beaches. The surfer says that if the dolphins are harmed, there is a punishment. He tells about one of his memories with dolphins and states that they are valuable creatures. When Sequence finally learned that 23,000 dolphins murdered in Japan in a year, we see that he decided to join the team. So the sequence is so sharp. There is a creature that is valued and a creature killed at the end. We also see the cultural conflict. This sequence fluctuates over time, as the surfer talks about a dolphin rescuing him in the past, and flashbacks it, then we move on to the present and talk about the massacre in Japan and understand why he joined this team. The sequence lasted 1 minute and 28 seconds. It consists of 20 cuts.

Use of Camera

The camera has been used in many ways in this documentary. The camera is fixed during the interview shots. There is always action, except for interview shots. Usually hand-held cameras were used in the documentary, as they reveal a secret business and enter prohibited places. There are hidden cameras that they put in their bags or in the pockets of their shirts. Thermal cameras measuring the temperature, underwater cameras were used. The most common camera / lens movement in the documentary is zoom in. Usually they do this when a person is speaking. (17:41-17:49) It is used when the person disagrees and gives false information or is experiencing an emotional moment. They also do this to create tension. There are drone shots. In this way, they collected images from the mysterious bay.

Use of Sound

They used the sound effectively in the documentary. Because sometimes we only see a black screen or the sea. The sound being put is a painful dolphin sound. This audio speaks volumes for the documentary. For example, the first thing that is put into the cove in the documentary is not the cameras but the sound devices. because these audio devices make it easier for us to understand everything. They also used the speeches they made from the walkie talkie radios they used during the operation and this action made us feel. If we look at the use of music, a wide variety and different styles of non-verbal music have been used. For example, dolphins used cheerful and moving music while jumping and swimming fast. Stagnant music was used when talking about the massacre. In addition, because dolphins are sound-sensitive creatures, they also used echo, disturbing sounds when they were closed in the pool. The team gathered to figure out what happened in that bay, and the type of music that would increase the tension was used when starting the operation. In this movie, voices are often used to create that tension and literally convey the emotion to us.

I think they divided the movie into three parts. The first episode is about the arrival of the narrator and director Louie Psihoyos to Taiji and how the dolphins are captive. The second part consists of the team gathering and planning how to enter that bay. The last section consists of the section where everything is revealed and the footage is broadcast at the conference.
No still images stay in the documentary for long. If the interviewer is not expressing anything with his facial expression, the images change. The desired emotion is supported by sound. Some episodes in the movie have been accelerated. For example; The scene of the fish market and the last scene we saw in the square is Ric O Barry. In the documentary, we see the IWC conference from the 20th minute. At the end of the film, Ric comes to that conference and shows the dolphins killed. But from the 20th minute on, we watch this conference without knowing that it will be used at the end, even thinking it like an archive image. In this way, they put in between footage and speeches from the conference to further the story.

The storyteller is Louie Psihoyos, who is also the director. We see him in the interviews he gave. We see it in the movie. He is also the person who brings the team together. But the reason for the movie is Ric who brought Louie to Japan. The documentary is told from Louie's point of view. The subject is the killed dolphins. He explains this subject with the help of Ric. Because Ric is an expert on dolphins and plays an important role in dolphins being trapped in ponds.
Louie started telling this story from the beginning, and we started learning with him.

I don't think there is any use of light in the documentary other than the interview scenes. Some of the film contains archive footage. Some of it consists of hidden shots at night. I haven't seen much of the dramatic use of light. Anyway, they did not have a situation where they could set up their lighting equipment and adjust the light, except for the interview shots. In places where daylight was not enough, they turned on the light of the camera and used it.

1:23:40-1:24:56
The last scene is one of the most important scenes. Because all the facts are revealed. The Japanese at the conference are losing the countries they take with them and everyone is facing this reality. This confrontation is happening thanks to Ric. A television is attached to his body and he shows what is going on in that bay. The scene starts with the preparation of Ric, then we see the Japanese representative of IWC. Ric starts walking towards the auditorium, and when he enters, my attention shifts to the other audience because I am curious about their reactions. My focus was only Ric all the way to the lecture hall, but then my focus drifted left and right. When I entered the presentation area, the angle of the camera began to change too much, so I had difficulty following it and could not find where to focus. Ric was sometimes to the right and sometimes to the left of the frame. The constant change of angle forced me to follow, but it made me sure that everyone saw the images Ric showed. I did not follow him, but I saw people taking videos and photos of him. This made me think that the risks they took had a good outcome.
