Various citizens from throughout the United States composed of various social clases (especially the middle class), followed William Miller's beliefs. While studying the bible, he particularly focused in on the book of Daniel, believing that Jesus would return based on the 2,300 day period starting in 457 BC. The first predicted date of the coming was in the spring of 1843 based on a simple set of calculations. As the anticipated date came closer, various citizens sold their personal belongings, dressed in robes, and altered their behaviors to better themselves. When the date passed and nothing occurred, many of Miller's followers disengaged in the movement. To preserve the rest of his followers, he continued establishing new dates in which the coming would occur. After Miller's death in 1849, Millerite followers decided to halt the predictions of future dates, but still believed in the second coming.
