I find some of their characteristics in them as a way to assist me in adding comedy to the actors in my films.
The technique I found in this drama to accentuate the comic effect was to amplify all the reactions and actions and convey the comic effect through the exaggerated facial expressions of the actors. In the original script, the pipe explodes in the location of the sink, but we searched many sinks and the cabinet space underneath them was too small and the pipes were built in, which showed that we would have had difficulty achieving the effect in the script if we hadn't brought in a professional team to help us. I asked the producer for her opinion and she consolidated our current budget, which didn't support us hiring another team to help us achieve such an effect.
We thought about a number of things, such as putting a water gun in the cupboard or digging out a new hose to put in the cupboard, but nothing worked.
I thought about it as a whole and I wondered if we could make some changes to the script without affecting the dramatic effect. I talked to the scriptwriter and asked if we could move the scene where the pipe explodes to the bathroom. Firstly, the bathroom had more space and was easier for us to film, and secondly, the plumbing connecting the shower was external and we could do some work on the plumbing. The screenwriter approved of my idea.
After getting permission from the scriptwriter, I immediately purchased a new hose from Amazon, enlisted the help of a guy friend of mine (who had an electric drill press) and we put the hose through the drill press and hung it in the bathroom to check the results. We found that if we made smaller holes then the water pressure would be higher and this way the effect was more dramatic. If the holes were made large so that the water would run out of the pipes, the effect would not be ideal. (The photo above is a group shot we took on the evening of the 22nd) I am very grateful to the team for their constant support and companionship, without them I would not have been able to complete the film on my own. Although we went through a lot of difficulties and there were things I wasn't happy with, it was a very valuable experience and I was able to learn more about what I could improve on and what mistakes I could avoid in the future. What made me most nervous was the set up as our production designer was not on set and only my Y2 housemate was helping out. I only found out the day before the shoot that the production designer didn't have all the original art package she needed. This was crucial as the original location was a white wall which was not visually appealing and my housemate and I urgently found a stack of newspapers from our own home. (As I was previously worried that the production design wouldn't fill that white wall, I left myself with a plan B, which was to go to the train station every day and get a free newspaper, why couldn't we get it all at once as I was worried that the pattern would be the same on the day and we would have a duplicate on the wall) We then used these newspapers to fill the whole white wall, including the table, as shown in the picture above.
Then there was the issue of the camera crew, as the venue was small so they had no way to move the camera significantly, luckily I was aware of this crisis beforehand so I made all the scenes on the storyboard into medium or close ups. I thought carefully about what should be special and noteworthy about our film in terms of storyboarding.
As a narrative-driven film, storyboarding, the most important thing is that I need to tell the story clearly through it, followed by some artistic perspective. Because I think it's pointless for me to think much in terms of artistic expression if the audience doesn't even know what our story is about.
So I need to go and make sure that the narrative efficiency in the storyboard, i.e. what kind of narrative each shot should carry, it has to have a narrative function, because we are not a mood movie.
I started to read the script of the writers more carefully and I indicated every single action down. I started to think about what I needed to make the characters do in this shot and what state I needed to get them to in the next shot. And, I was figuring out how to carry the maximum amount of narrative in a single shot.

As we were the last crew to shoot, I had heard about some unexpected situations that had happened to previous crews, where they had encountered unexpected situations on set that had caused them to not finish the shoot as planned.
For our script, if I had some plot missing in the middle, the story would have been completely disconnected, which would have been devastating for us. So I had to reduce the likelihood of this happening.
I reprinted a copy of my finished storyboard, got some markers and I marked down the most important few shots for each scene. Because there were times when I would write a few more camera positions in the storyboard to take into account the editing, but this had to be done only if we had sufficient shooting time. The shots that I mark will be evaluated during the shoot and if the day goes well, I will go ahead with the original plan.
