Introduce yourself: name, major/field of study, hobbies, languages you speak, favorite places in your city.

Hi, my name is Lillian Naakai Dappah, At LaGuardia, I am majoring in business Administration however, that is just for now I will be transferring to a fashion school, where I am a fashion major. I know how to design clothing very well and how to make any type of design from start to finish. Some hobbies I have would be designing, playing games, and reading manga. I am from a country called Ghana, and I speak two languages, which are English and Gha (The language of Ghanaians). I am also trying to learn some other languages for example, Korean, Japanese, French, Swedish and Spanish. I just moved to the Bronx so I don’t really have some favorite places, but When I was living in Queens, I would go absolutely everywhere and I loved going to Ktown in Manhattan, QCM (Queen Center Mall), And other fun and cool places in Manhattan. I may have been born in the Bronx, grew up in Queens, and have moved back to the Bronx again, but I am a Manhattan baby.

Then, say a few words about your neighborhood, focusing on places where poverty stands out to be a concern? How this impacts your community? Why it’s a concern?

I haven’t seen all of the Bronx yet, but so far where I am in co-op city I haven’t seen any homeless people at all and nobody’s really living in poverty because we only pay the rent not water or electricity. But back when I lived in Queens, there were homeless people everywhere down the street, in the trains, in restaurants, in grocery stores, in the mall, they were everywhere. This is a huge concern because this just shows how difficult it is to live in queens, and this really impacts my community. It’s not cute. People are supposed to be living like people, like how I am living. When I see how homeless people are treated it makes me so sad because they people just like us, they were like us once, they just ended up struggling in life due to money.

My name is Jasmine Ali, and I'm studying New Media Tech with a focus on Entrepreneurship. When I'm not hitting the books, I enjoy indoor gardening and watch crime documentaries. I'm also passionate about video editing and graphic design. I speak both Bangla and English fluently. In my city, some of my favorite spots include the serene LIC Pier, the vibrant Flushing Main Street, and occasionally, taking leisurely strolls around Manhattan.

Regarding my neighborhood, I reside in Woodside, Queens. While poverty isn't as noticeable here, I occasionally observe instances where poverty is a concern, particularly among certain Hispanic families. I've seen mothers with their babies, trying to make ends meet by selling water, candies, or flowers at traffic signals. Ending poverty, as outlined by the United Nations' Goal 1, is crucial for ensuring a fair and just society. Poverty is a global crisis that impacts communities worldwide, including our own. It deprives individuals of basic necessities and opportunities for a better life. Causes of poverty can vary, including lack of education, limited job opportunities, discrimination, and unequal distribution of resources. Addressing poverty requires collective efforts to provide access to education, employment opportunities, and social support systems. It's a pressing concern that requires ongoing attention and action to create a more equitable society for all.

Hello friends, My name is Amal Shuaib, and I'm majoring in Business Administration. I'm passionate and enjoy exploring different interests in my free time. One of my favorite hobbies is cooking—experimenting with new recipes and flavors never ceases to excite me. I'm also an avid drawer and find solace in bringing my imagination to life through sketches and doodles.

I am fluent in Arabic and English as a second language, which has helped me connect with people from different backgrounds. Long Island is one of my favorite places in New York. Its serene beaches, lush greenery, and vibrant culture make it a perfect destination for a quick escape from the city's hustle and bustle.

As a resident of Queens, I'm well aware of the socioeconomic challenges that certain areas of the borough face. Neighborhoods such as Jamaica and Far Rockaway are grappling with a high poverty rate, which has created a ripple effect on the overall well-being of the community. The lack of access to quality education, healthcare, and job opportunities has made it difficult for residents to break out of the cycle of poverty. This, in turn, has led to an increase in crime rates and other social issues.

I can't wait to hear all about you! I just shared a bit about myself, and now it's your turn to shine. Let's get started - I'm ready to be impressed! <3

Hello! My name is Ines Belakhdar, my major is business administration I will transfer to Baruch to pursue my degree in finance. I'm from Algeria my first language is Arabic and my second is French and English. My favorite place in New York City is Bryant Park, especially during the holiday season and Central Park particularly when spring brings the city to life with blooming flowers and the perfect weather. I live in Queens where we see a mix of incomes, from high income in spots like Long Island City and Forest Hills to areas like Jamaica and Corona where poverty is more common. I notice that there are many homeless people and families just trying to get by. The poverty rate is increasing, people are finding it hard to provide for their families, especially the Hispanic immigrant. In the subway, mothers with babies strapped to their backs and young kids who should be in school or playing in parks are selling candies and fruits. Poverty happens due to factors like job scarcity and unfair treatment. We need to ensure everyone has access to education, healthcare, and fair opportunities for a better community where everyone can succeed.

Hello everyone, my name is Mahidev Krishna, my major is Business Administration. My hobbies include playing video games and watching all sorts of series. I only speak English and my favorite place in my city is my home. Why you may ask? This is the only place where I can truly be myself and I enjoy that very much.

My neighborhood isn't that much of a fixer upper but what i will say is that a few blocks down where a massive intersection is very bad as in terms of looks and the type of people who are there most of the time. Homelessness is rampant there in which it isn't too bad but noticeable. In 2022 and 2023 i have never spotted a homeless person in the metro but in 2024 without fail every time i use the trains there is always one homeless individual there. This could have an effect on our children who have to look at this person's situation and think to themselves that is the norm. I'm absolutely disgusted by how the government is handling this homelessness situation. There needs to be some change before things get out of hand!!!

Thanks for reading:)

My name is Eric Sumba and i am majoring in Industrial design. Being born and raised as a Hispanic person in NYC can be a lot but after living here for such a long time i have become immune to all my surroundings. I love to explore and try new things/ food, and love going to concerts when i have the chance but other than that i love to draw and design as my life literally revolves around that now. I'm currently working on projects for school and have an amazing intern in clothing and it was always my dream to work in fashion. So far, the road is looking bright but I do love some challenges and very competitive so I will try my best to execute my challenges.

Right now, NYC is going through a rough time in housing apartments for residents as they are increasing the rent every year and at the same time providing free shelter for immigrants from around the world. On top of that it has also cut down on funds for schools and other after-school activities. What's making things worse is workers' hours are getting cut down and a lot of these families work overtime to provide for their family and kids.

Hello and welcome to a small chapter of my story. I am Paige, currently a student at LaGuardia Community College. Born and raised in Louisiana I am shaped by the values and culture of my hometown. This essay is a canvas where I paint a picture of who I am, my interests, achievements, and my dreams for the future.

My journey began in New Orleans, a place that has imbued in me values like family, church, determination, community spirit, and perseverance! These values were further nurtured by my close-knit family, the loving, supportive, and diverse unit that has always encouraged me.

In the realm of education, my interests have always been diverse, ranging from speaking, reading, writing in English, business affairs, public administration interests, history, dance, literature, and arts. My time at Metropolitan College of New York has been a blend of academic pursuits and extracurricular activities. A significant milestone in my academic journey so far has been the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and Black Maternal Health project, which has been both challenging and rewarding. My major is Hospitality, Tourism, & Event Management but my field of study is Emergency Management & Business Continuity. My favorite places in New York are the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Empire State Building, Times Square, the Statue of Liberty, the Museum of Modern Art, and Washington Square Park.

I am often described as a leader, empathetic, sympathetic, advocate, creative, analytical, and compassionate. These traits have guided me in both my academic and personal life, helping me to tackle challenges, build strong relationships, and maintain a balanced perspective.

Beyond academics, my interests include yoga, Pilates, hiking, running, biking, playing tennis, racquetball, movies, engaging in arts, and volunteering. These activities not only provide me with enjoyment but also contribute to my personal growth, teaching me skills like teamwork, time management, and resilience.

All Bronx residents live under the poverty line, particularly the South Bronx has been and continues to be one of the most over-policed neighborhoods in NYC, leading to a troubling cycle of community tension, incarceration, and family destabilization.

The South Bronx poverty rate is controversially high crime in the community, it difficult to get good medical care, affordable housing shortage, youth unemployment remains high and quality food contributes to stress and anxiety, which is bad for a person's health.

High levels of poverty in some areas of the Bronx also may be exacerbated by the language barriers many residents face overcrowding, rent burdens, and low vacancy push families out of stable housing into homelessness.

The combination of low incomes and low-income housing vacancy rates makes it impossible for many families to find affordable apartments, leaving them in overcrowded, stressful living environments. Many of these families who are homeless are black and Latino and mostly turn to shelter because it is the only option.

I speak a bit of Japanese because of my mom's side of the family. I am born and raised from Honolulu, Hawaii and I have been living in New York for about 2 years. One of my favorite spots in my city is Austin St. in Forest Hills, it has a bunch of bars and restaurants to choose from and it’s growing more and more each day. Unfortunately, one area where poverty is noticeable is 71st Continental Ave, where homelessness is common, and I believe it affects the crime rate in our community. As, our area continues to grow, I've noticed a significant increase in prices that has contributed to some experiencing poverty. I believe it's important for our community to acknowledge and support residents, ensuring that despite rising costs, we continue to take care of everyone.

I am also an aspiring guitarist, finding joy in the discipline and rewards of practice. In moments of reflection, I dream of a self-reliant life in the domain of commerce.

Kerala is known for its remarkable performance in indicators of human development. There was a time when people struggled to afford proper food and often had no homes, forcing them to sleep on streets or sidewalks. I'm excited to share a little about my academic focus lies in the realm of commerce my interests extend far beyond textbooks and balance sheet. I am fortunate to be proficient in several languages. Alongside English, I speak Malayalam and Hindi.

In my neighborhood, poverty is a pressing issue, especially in areas where access to essential services like education and healthcare is lacking. This affects our community by widening the gap between the haves and the have-nots, impacting overall well-being and opportunities for advancement. It's concerning because it fosters inequality, diminishes social cohesion, and undermines the potential for collective prosperity. Effectively addressing poverty requires concerted efforts to provide support, implement policies that promote economic mobility, education , health care, pension and ensure equitable access to resources for all residents.

Hello everyone ,it's nice to meet you all .For those who don’t know me, my name is Sana Shajan, and for those who know me, hello again. I am a person with Indian citizenship and I'm quite proud about that.India is the second-largest populated country in the world. India is also known as Bharat ,Hindustan. It is surrounded by oceans from three sides which are Bay Of Bengal in the east, the Arabian Sea in the west and Indian oceans in the south. Not only this but India is a land of various cultures and a rich heritage too.India is one of the countries of ancient time in the world. People, weather, and geographical conditions have deeply influenced Indian culture and tradition. It is believed that Indian culture is unique in the world. For the time being I am living in Thrissur a beautiful district in the state Kerala.Thrissur is known as the cultural capital of Kerala, and the land of Poorams.Thrissur is also known as the cultural capital of Kerala because of its cultural, spiritual and religious leanings throughout History. Religion is important and varied in Thrissur. The city has historically been a centre of Hindu scholarship, and Christianity, Islam and Judaism are believed to have entered the Indian subcontinent through Thrissur and its surrounding areas.

So I am currently pursuing my graduation in Vimala College Autonomous, Thrissur. In addition to that I am a part of various other courses too . My hobbies list is too long but in short I love exploring the Nature in my leisure time I spend time singing and enjoying Nature .Dancing is also one of my favourites. Along with that I love learning new languages and their cuisines. Net surfing too is my favourite hoobies so far I can speak a few languages like Hindi English and Malayalam.

So let's get to the point that poverty is one of the upcoming issues that the world has been currently facing .Poverty in our country dates back to ancient times, when the poor were not given the same privileges as the wealthy, and they were even denied access to religious places. Unemployment, a lack of education, poor resource utilization, corruption, and poor government policy are all major causes of poverty. This is the condition of India but I'm glad that after 2005, Kerala grew and reduced poverty faster than many other states, with growth being driven mainly by services.Poverty Alleviation Programmes aims to reduce the rate of poverty in the country by providing proper access to food, monetary help, and basic essentials to households and families belonging to below the poverty line threshold. State Government was successful in making the state with the least number of people residing in poverty .

Thank you all

Many of the women staying at these shelters are raising their small children around this type of behavior which i believe to be very damaging because it continues a cycle.

Hello everyone! My name is Isabella Diaz. I am in my final year at LaGuarida and I am majoring in Industrial Design. A hobby of mine is playing Animal Crossing on my Nintendo Switch. I am Dominican, Italian and Puerto Rican. I speak English and Spanish and have lived in New York all my life. Born and rasied. I love visiting Manhattan during my free time to visit all the intresting places the city has to offer especially on warm days.

I live in Flushing, Queens where the most acesssible places for food are fast food resturants. The closest "healthy" spot would be a 20 minute drive and in a congested area where its not easy to find parking. In addition, delivery options arent cheap and the food isnt as good when it arrives. Grocery options are difficult as well as the prices of items increase every day. In conclusion this is a concern for everyone who want a healthier option versus Mc Donalds or Taco Bell everday.

Hello, everyone. My name is Jianjun Chen and my major is Business Administration. I come from China. I immigrated to the United States in 2021 and now live in Brooklyn, New York. Therefore, I speak Chinese and English now. I like playing basketball and playing video games. My favorite place is the basketball court in the park in Brooklyn, because I really like playing basketball, and basketball also allows me to meet many foreign friends.

In my neighborhood, poverty is evident in the dilapidated buildings and the long lines at local food banks. This pervasive issue strains our community by limiting access to essential resources and exacerbating social challenges like crime and educational disparities. Addressing poverty is paramount not only for individual well-being but also for fostering a healthier, more resilient community for everyone.

Hi, my name is Maggy. I was born and raised in Queens. I am a transfer student here at LaGuardia. Before that, I attended York College and majored in early childhood education. I am now attending LaGuardia community college to major in Business Administration. In my household we primarily speak Albanian. I haven't had the time to participate in any extracurricular activities due to work, but that hasn't stopped me from finding time for hobbies like biking, cooking, and playing sports like volleyball and basketball. I my city I enjoy going to forest park for a run or even to simply enjoy the fresh air.

In my community, an area within my community that is considered more disadvantaged is Wyckoff. These areas deal with poor housing quality that include: water leaks, cracks, holes, heating related issues and mice. By having maintenance defects it causes many health issues such as asthma, respiratory issues and poor mental health. Wyckoff is known to be more prone to crime and homelessness. Given that the crime rate is higher, fewer families are likely to go near the area. Leading families such as my own to move out. Also with the lack of care the city has for this area you noticed a lot more trash laying around the neighborhood leading to unpleasant scents and mice problems.

Hi everyone! My name is Jenny Kurti, I am majoring in Business Administration. I am fluent in two languages, English and Albanian. At the moment, I am attempting to learn Turkish. I love adventure, trying out new restaurants and exploring new places. I love Manhattan, there's so many restaurants and things to do. There's always something happening, I feel like you can never get bored of it. I also love Long Island because it's more calm and quiet with more nature and nice beaches. I have a couple hobbies, some are taking walks, watching tv, hiking, cooking and gardening. I live in Glendale, Queens. My favorite place in my area would be Fresh pond because they have a variety of shops, diverse restaurants and a couple of coffee shops.

Near Glendale, a place that faces poverty is Myrtle Wycoff. Going towards Myrtle Wycoff I’ve noticed an increase in homelessness and crime during and after COVID. Some things you may see are hard working families trying to sell fruits etc and products near the train station. They all work side by side trying to make a living with their children with them helping out. It's so sad to see situations like these. However, in my personal opinion this area doesn't have a major affect on my community. Back in 2020 an all male homeless shelter opened in my community in between 2 middle schools and a shopping center. This housing center was used for men who were released from Rikers Island. This is what I feel has impacted my community in a negative way because since then there has been more crime in the area and more individuals sleeping in the streets. This is a concern for the children's safety and the safety of others who come in the area.

Hello, my name is Alexander Sienkiewicz I am a business administration major at Laguardia. I like a sport called muay thai and train it often I speak both Polish and English, my favorite city is New York because theres no place like home. In my neighborhood it is very nice and I dont really know much else as I have been here most of my life. I think that poverty is very crippling for communities and needs to be helped when possible. There are many causes of poverty and some of these could be wars, weak economies, corruption, political unrest and other reasons but is important that it gets addressed so that it does not worsen. Poverty is a global crisis because many nations depend on healthy trade for their economies to thrive so if one part of the economy fails due to poverty the more wealthier economies will still get hurt due to the disruption in the supply chain. Ending poverty is one step to making the world more united and improving the global standard of living. Where there is extreme poverty It really effects everyone around them as those people are unable to take part in their local economy and imporve it and like mentioned earlier this only shuts oppurtunities down for everyone else.

My name is Neyha Ata, and I'm 20 years old. I'm currently a Business Administration major at LaGuardia, with plans to transfer to Baruch to earn a bachelor's degree in Accounting. My goal is to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) by passing the CPA exam. I was born and raised in Queens, however my family is from Pakistan. I speak Urdu and English fluently, with a good understanding of Punjabi, although I'm not fluent in speaking it. As the youngest of five siblings, I have three older sisters and one older brother. I work as a cashier at a Key Food in Queens for part-time, and in my free time, I enjoy painting, playing video games on my PS5, and watching movies or TV shows. I'm also a cat lover and have two adorable cats at home who bring me joy and are the whole reason I go to work.

After several years of declining poverty, New York City experienced a sharp reversal in 2022, with its largest yearly increase in the poverty level in a decade. According to a new report by a research group at Columbia University and Robin Hood, a large philanthropic organization, 23% of the city's residents were unable to afford basic necessities like housing and food in 2022, this is an increase from the 18% in 2021. This means that nearly two million New Yorkers, including one in four children, live in poverty. United Nation Goal 1 aims to reduce the number of people living in extreme poverty (less than $1.25 a day) to less than 3% of the population by 2030. Poverty is a global crisis because it deprives individuals of basic needs like food, water, shelter, and healthcare, limits access to education and job opportunities, preserves inequality and social injustice, and hinders economic growth and development. Poverty has a significant impact on our community by concentrating poverty in specific areas leading to social and economic segregation. The causes of poverty are many, including: lack of education and job skills, unemployment and underemployment, systemic inequality, limited access to healthcare and social services, political instability, etc.

The Bronx is actually the poorest with a 29% poverty rate. The poverty in the Bronx is a deep rooted widespread problem caused by social injustice and inequality. Two key factors in contributing to poverty is the lack of education to secure high paying jobs, and lack of affordable housing.

Hi all,

My name is Destiny Valentina Ceron but I prefer to go by Valentina. I am currently at LaGuardia pursuing a business adminestration degree with hopes of transferring to Baruch and getting a finance degree. Some of my hobbies include reading, working out and spending time in nature. My family comes from Colombia. I speak fluent Spanish and English.I am from Queens, New York. Some of my favorite spots in Queens include Forest Hills, Kew Gardens, and Flushing. I appreciate the diversity of Queens and the millions of food choices available. As well the family-oriented home life of Queens. I also enjoy how much nature there is in queens my favorite parks are located in College point and Kew gardens. In addition to this, I am fortunate to live in a good neighborhood where poverty is not so much of a concern. Its relatively safe and well taken care of which I am very grateful for but I do work in Manhattan .My form of transportation is to take the train and that's where Immediately notice a lot of homeless people and poverty. The smells while waiting for the train can become overwhelming. Manhattan is known for the extreme wealth as well its poverty. Which can lead to basic necessities being a lack such as food and healthcare. The high cost of Manhattan also makes it even more difficult for people living in poverty to afford the most basic needs. The lack of affordable housing can force low-income residents to live in overcrowded conditions, impacting their physical and mental well-being and that is why its such a big concern. If isn't addressed it can lead to even higher crime rates in the city. Addressing poverty in Manhattan is important not only for the individuals directly affected, but for the overall well-being of the community as a whole.
