Percussive Guitar - Disco

In disco music, one of the key techniques used within the rhythm section is the high pitched percussive sounding guitar. Played by the rhythm guitar, this technique creates a beat of its own, giving the listeners a reason to dance. This is achieved by playing a chord then doing one of two things, either palm muting the strings altogether to make the chord short, or lifting the fingers slightly to stop the strings from making a sound, and strumming to make an almost snare-like sound.

Falsetto Singing - Disco

Another key feature of disco is the high pitched singing, known as Falsetto. The use of falsetto was highly used in disco and makes any disco song instantly recognisable. To sing in falsetto, you need to tighten your throat and imagine you're singing above your head, meaning you can hit notes way above your normal range. A good example of this is "Staying alive" by the Beegees.

Disco's soul purpose was to get people to dance, so a strong beat to accompany the playing is key, to give people something to dance to. The "four to the floor" rhythm, created by the drummer of the disco group "The Trammps" is a simple drum beat, where the kick drum is played on every single beat of the bar, a snare on the second and fourth beat, and a hi-hat played on the off beat, to give a slightly syncopated feel.

Finger picking - Folk

Folk music doesn't have that many key techniques that are used, but finger picking is used a lot within this genre. Usually done with an acoustic guitar, the thumb plays the bass notes, which usually alternate, and the index, middle, and ring finger play the 3rd, 2nd and 1st string respectively. During an instrumental, this technique allows the player to incorporate a melody line to their picking.

The key rhythmic technique of blues is known as the 12 bar rhythm. The tonic chord, E for example, is played for 4 bars, the fourth, A, is played for 2 bars, then returns to E for 2 more bars, the fifth, B, is played for a bar, then A for a bar, then it returns to E for the remainder. A B7 could be used in the final bar as a bridge between the verses. This is usually played with power chords, and "hammer on's".

In both the rhythmic and lead parts to most rock songs, hammer on's can be heard. A hammer on is achieved by playing a note, fretted or not, then hitting the string on another fret with a different finger, playing another note without strumming. A good example of this is the intro to Black Sabbath's "Paranoid"

Where there's a hammer on, there's usually a pull off to follow. A pull of is the opposite of a hammer on, two fingers are placed on two different frets on the same string, once you play the highest note, without strumming, you take the finger playing the highest note off to leave the lower note to resonate. To make the second note stronger, as you "pull off", pluck the string with the finger you're taking off. An audible use of this is in the beginning solo of Metallica's "one".

Tremolo/Alternate Picking - Rock/Metal

Tremolo or alternate picking is used heavily throughout some heavy rock and most metal. This is where you play a singular note multiple times at high speed, the note can change during this. This is achieved by a fast strumming movement, using either the wrist or forearm, and a lot of practice. A notable use of this is in "Knights of Cydonia" by Muse.

One of the more advanced techniques out of these, is sweep picking, which is only ever seen in metal. Sweep picking combines arpeggios with very intricate strumming. To obtain this effect, the left hand plays a scale of choice, but only one note per string can be played. The right hand then uses a sweeping motion to play all the notes individually, but it must sound smooth to get the right effect.

Vibrato - Soul

While vibrato is used in many genres nowadays, it became very popular to use originally in soul. Vibrato is the slight bending, or "wobbling" of a long note to make it sound just a little more interesting than a straight note. The ideal rate (frequency) that the note should be modified by is 6 Hz, so 6 "wobbles" a second, this is because this specific frequency is the most appealing to the ear.
