Why does the American Civil War still matter?

The Civil War still matters today because it carries a lot of lessons and stories that still benefit us. Today there is a lot of division almost comparable to the times of civil war. People today are divided in half by political beliefs and systematic hierarchy. This division was most prominent during covid as riots were started, companies or small businesses were raided, black men were killed and so much more. The division is very much still there and is unfortunately becoming normalized. Its times like this where we must reflect on our history’s past to guide us in moving forward. The civil war is a great example of things we should and should not do in these times. Instead of pulling away from one another its essential that we are very intentional in embracing one another and creating space to listen to each other’s stories or perspectives on these issues. America during the civil war was so caught up in creating their own glorified agenda where they had their own goals they wanted to complete. This left out many voices in the process which contributes to systematic oppression today. It’s important to not be so focused on who’s right and who is wrong and really look at the bigger picture. During the civil war many people were running off their selfish needs and wants and I think this is like what’s happening now. If anything, this has become a big part of American culture. It’s up to individuals today to use tools like social media to collaborate and change the narrative.

How does your understanding of our course theme of “keeping track” evolved throughout the term?

At first when the theme of “keeping track” was presented to me in class I took it very literal and struggled to come up with ideas or connections to the topic. What really helped was the word cloud we made as I referred to it a lot while making my photo journal or writing my notes. It just helped remind me of all the different traits that are needed to stay on track. I was able to apply this theme to a lot of different readings or even other classes I was taking throughout this semester. I feel like I was able to successfully apply it to the civil war lesson we were exploring throughout the semester as well since to follow along It was necessary to “keep on track.” Even when it comes to keeping track with current events today, it’s important to reflect on past events like the American civil war.

What are some insights concerning Roosevelt University’s community resources that are in place for you to succeed as an individual and student in this college environment?

Roosevelt university has great recourses to ensure students succeed. While I did not use many of them this semester, I have heard a lot of great things about the learning commons and office hours with different professors. I believe the faculty here are easy to work with as they the majority of them are very flexible and willing to work with you as long as you work with them. I personally found the most help though the women’s basketball team as I was hired as the women’s basketball manager and required to attend academic check in session as well as complete study hall hours. This was a great way of keeping myself on track as it held me accountable. The staff was also willing to help me with any work if I needed it which was really reassuring to know.

What is the most valuable lesson you learned in your HON 101 experience this semester?

The most valuable lesson I learned this year would be open to new people and experiences as you never know where it may take you. I came into HON 101 very anti-social with the one goal of just getting my work done to complete the class. This ended up changing as the semester went on. I began having conversations and collaborating with the people around me. I now can recognize and conversate with different faces in the hallways. This did not only elevate my school experience but it also taught me so many new things as I listened to people stories and individual experiences.
