In the late 1600s, these characters made an appearance in comic plays in England. In the Victorian era, pantomime became the typical christmas fare. Stories of fairy tales were told with a witty thyming style. During this time celebrity's would bring popular songs and topical comedy into pantomime. In the 1930s and 40s, sport stars and tevelvision celebrities were welcomed to perform in a pantomime. 
Pantomime is known as a wonderful institution for the people who live in Britain. 
Usually, Pantomimes take place around Christmas time and are always based on fairy tales such as Peter Pan, Aladdin, Cinderella etc. The great thing about Pantomimes is that you don't have to have a theatre perform the play in but you could go watch one at the village halls throughout Britain from either professionals or from a local amateur production. 
Audience participation is always an important part of Pantomime since they are encouraged to hiss at the villain, argue with the dame (who is always played by a man) by responding to "Oh no/yes you will!", or by shouting at the hero of the piece by shouting "He's behind you!".
Slapstick is another massive role in pantomime, from throwing food to falling on stage. 
The villain would have been defeated by the end of the pantomime, true love conquering all and everyone (except the villain) lives happily ever after. 
Pantomime means "all kinds of mime" which is generally acknowledged which British pantomime has been modelled on early Elizabethan and Stuart times. Masques in the fourteeth century were usually musical, mime or spoken drmams played in grand houses until the seventeenth century when they were just an excuse for a theme of a party. 
The "Feast of Fools" may have particapted in why some roles are played by the opposite gender like the principal boy is always played by a girl which is a huge tradition for the Peter Pan plays and the Dame is always played by a man even though the character is a woman.

Usually Lazzi is memorized by actors and writers so they could insert a section when one was needed. 
Commedia Dell'arte ("Comedy of Art") is known for improvisation or an unwritten play. This form of art had a long life in Italy, especially between the fourteenth and eighteenth century. The subject of the play was chosen, characters had names and had their relations to other characters all before anything is improvised. The story was divided into acts and scenes. The sitouation was made clear the audience along with the actions of each scene. A lot of the improvisation was up to the actor who could make the audience cry of laughter or cry from the saddness on the performance that was being improvised. 
Characters like the servant, the lady's maid, the old man or a common stock character that appeared in every play always wore a mask and a conventional dress. These typical stage characters which was enjoyed for centeries of popularity in Europe. Ildotttore (which means Doctor in Italian): Is the character that is usually wise and old character who are usualy the parents of the hero of heroin which are Mr and Mrs Darling in our show. 

Columbia (heroin): This character is the female hero which in our pantomime it is Wendy. 

Ellcaptino: This one is the bad guy of the story which for us is Captain James Hook.

A playwright and Scottish novelist named J.M Barrie. Barrie created his main character to be a mischievous and free-spirited boy who could never grow up but could fly. Neverland is a mythical island where Peter is the leader of the group called the Lost Boys. This group would also live with fairies, Native Americans, Mermaids and Pirates where they would also occasionally live with ordinary children from the real world outside Neverland. 
J.M Barrie designed Peter from his brother, David, who had died while ice-skating before his 14th birthday. James shared the idea with his mother that David would forever be a boy. 
J.M Barrie also grew a relationship with the Davies family especailly the brothers George, John, Peter, Michael and Nicholas who ended up calling him "Uncle Jim". A few people thought that James Mathew Barrie had unhealthy relationships with the boys but there was no proof found and Nicholas said  He was an innocent — which is why he could write Peter Pan.'
It is usually traditional for a woman to play as Peter Pan in a show or musical. The character's original costume was a red tunic with dark green tights even though in the origianl book his outfit is made from autumm leaves and cobwebs. Peter Pan's green costume came around in the 1920's but became more popular after Walt Disney's adaptation of the story in 1953. 
The creators at Disney gave Peter a short sleeved green tunic, green tights and a green cap with a red feather on top. His eyes are brown while his ears are pointed like an elf ear. Hook (1991) takes a different turn when Robin Williams plays an adult version of Peter Pan returning to Neverland to fight against Captain Hook who has taken his children. These used to be a festival in Athens to honour the god Dionysus which was the god of the grape-harvest, winemaking and fertility which the genres would be the satyr play, comedy and tragedy. 
Westen theatres has the roots of Ancient Greece and the plays that originally came from there. 
The origins of tragedy in Greek Theare are debated amongst scholars which some have debate that the genre is linked to earlier art form, the lyrical perforamnce of poetry. While other scholars believe there is a strong link to the rituals performed to worship the god Dionysos like sacrificing goats while wearing masks. Dionysos became known as the god of theatre and maybe there is a connection to drinking rites which made worshippers lose control of themselves and their emotions which made them become a different person which that is what most actors hope to do on stage. The dance for the ritual was evident in the role of the chorus and the music.
Plays were performed in an open-air theatre (like in the picture below) which was open to men but we are unsure if women were allowed to watch the performance. Around the middle of the 5th century BC enterance was free. The plot for tragedy was inspired by stories from Greek mythology which was a massive part of their religion. This meant plays dealth with the morals of wrong and rights with tragic no-win dilemmas. Violence was not allowed to be shown on stage and a death of a character had to be heard from offstage and not be seen from a single member of the audience. Political statements from the poet was permitted from the plays. 
The origins of Greek comedy plays have been lost. However, the activity of mimicking others and men dressing goes back long way before records were written. There is a first indication of such activity in the world of Greece, when it came from pottery from around 6th century BC. Actors dressed as satyrs, horses and dances had exaggerated costumes. There is also a different source of comedy from poems of Archilochus (7th century BC) and also Hipponax in the century before which contains explict sexual humour and crude. Aristole is a possible third origin since lies were sung during festivals dedicated for Dionysis.
The first part of a comedy play was where the chorus of 24 members entered to perform dance routines and a song. They would be dressed to impress with their outlandish costumes to represent anything like knights riding on a horse which would actually be another man or even utensils that are used in the kitchen. Usually the play was named after the Chorus. During the second phase the show now had a wity verbal contest of debate between the main actors with a plot element that included fast changing scenes where improisation was needed. Then the third part is when the Chorus spoke to the audience for the poet. Finally, the finale, was where the Chorus gave the audience another dance routine and a song. 
In tragedy performers, every actor, singer and dancer would be male. There would be a star performer and two other actors who would have the speaking roles. There might be on an occasion when a fourth actor was allowed to be on but only if it was non-instrumental to the plot. Comedy plays were quiet different since they allowed the playwright to directly address events compared to the tragic plays of theatre in the Greek world. Aristophanes won many festival competitions like the tragedians. His work poked fun at philosophers, other artists and politicains who might be sitting as an audience member. In New Comedy which an artist named Menander helped create introduced a young romantic lead into plays along with other stock characters like the cunning slave or a cook. I choose to audition for Captain James Hook, so I watched many clips of the different ways he has been played which I favored Captain Hook when Cathy Rigby played the main role of Peter Pan herself. This adaptation was performed in front of a live audience unlike the many different stories of Peter Pan on the screens. This way, I could observe how the actor interacted with the audience and how cruel he let his character be.
We also watched ITV's adaptation of the pantomime Cindaerlla. I got to see how usually an audience reacts to a villain with hisses and boos as they enter the stage. 
We also had a look at different warm ups for both physically and verbally. Physical warm ups helps pump  blood around the body and into the muscels which means it is carrying oxygen to the muscels which can prevent spraints. Vocal warm ups are there to improve the quality of the sounds you make and it also helps to prevent a vocal injury. 
We also did some research into Commedia Del'larte which is a theatrical style from the 1500s which was popular in Italy and other countries in Europe.
My weakness during the first week was that I took so long to write a monologue that I was happy to bring to the audition.

We wanted to use a scene using Lazzi where Tiger Lily is kidnapped. In small groups we had to come up with choreography and ideas for the scene from the clips we had watched in that lesson. In my group, Lyndsey was playing Tiger Lily, pretending to not have a clue on what was happening behind her as she was pretending to pick flowers while Emily, Beth and I pretended to be the pirates who were going to capture her with a piece of rope. Emily and Beth played the two dopey pirates while I played Smee who was whacked several time by the rope and tripped up so I landed on my back. Then Emily would end up being wrapped around the rope with Lyndsey before getting taken away.

Stream of Consciousness is where you have an idea but it is not thought with great detail. It be a good block to work things on for a scene or two for your script.With this meothod, you can write the script without forming the story completely which is what we used in our group. 
As a class, we decided what scenes there would be before small groups were assigned to write up a scene each and then later making the scenes connect so the story could flow. We was given the task to write the scene where Wendy has been kidnapped by Captain Hook and there is a note left behind for Peter. Then the Lost Boys talk about how they are going to rescue her from the pirates. 
A lot of the ideas and script was kept from this scene but a few changes were made. Zanni: This character is always the one who has the intetion to make the audience laugh from the gags or slapsticks in a performance. Smee, Nana Ninni, the three pirates are the funny characters in our adaptation of a Peter Pan Pantomime.

Ildotttore (which means Doctor in Italian): Is the character that is usually wise and old character who are usualy the parents of the hero of heroin which are Mr and Mrs Darling in our show. 
Columbia (heroin): This character is the female hero which in our pantomime it is Wendy. 
Ellcaptino: This one is the bad guy of the story which for us is Captain James Hook.
Pantalope: Their goal is to achieve a large income of money which can be related to Mr Darling but there is no mention of it in the Pantomime but in other adaptations, money is an important thing for him at the beginning of the stories. ]]> 2018-12-17 19:02:20 UTC https://padlet.com/henrypaulcharles/g7ne1unj4px1/wish/315307126 Week 5 henrypaulcharles https://padlet.com/henrypaulcharles/g7ne1unj4px1/wish/315311063 This week we started looking at musical theatre techniques but we also looked at Greek Theatre. To understand what the Theatre was like, our tutor split the class into two. One person at a time would lead their group by moving slowly in anyway possible and the group had to follow them from one side to the other unitl everyone had gone. 
By doing an activity in a large number, it meant a large audience would be able to understand the story more clearly. On Monday we learnt Pirates of the Caribbean which is the opening dance to act 2 which is such a lively dance that has turns, rolls and jumps so the audience is focused back onto the stage. 
I was unable to use my right wrist since I had spraint it the following week at home so I couldn't do the roll or support my upper body on the next part because of my wrist. 
By the end of the week we now started to have a run through in every lesson so we started to make the run through smooth as possible. It also helped us space out in dances so we knew where we should be on the side of the stage which would be easy for us to get back on for the next scene we would next be on. ]]> 2018-12-17 19:19:42 UTC https://padlet.com/henrypaulcharles/g7ne1unj4px1/wish/315316262 henrypaulcharles https://padlet.com/henrypaulcharles/g7ne1unj4px1/wish/315322373 During our shows, we defiently had good and bad moments for our pantomime and there are some things I would change to improve. 

For a few shows, the group on stage right who is meant to lift up Lewis in a Million Dreams. Lewis always felt so stiff when being picked up since he wasn't relaxed which could mean he didn't quiet trust the group who had to lift him. Lewis might have felt uncomfortable with some members of the group were tasked at lifting Lewis. I would have spoken to Lewis to see if there was anyway we could make him more comfortable. Possibly making the group participate in a group activity so we all trusted one another with being successful during the lifts in each show. 
In one show, Kim crashed into the chair on stage right which was near the table and front flat. I would have reminded Kim and the rest of the class to be mindful of spacing so no one would get injured. 
During the lifts, some members of the team would change where their hands would go when lifting Lewis. My hands always went around the back of his hips to take on most of his body weight. However, it was made difficult when people lifting his upper body would place one hand in that area too which meant they would always elbow me in the arms during the lifts and gently placing Lewis back down on the stage. 

During my scene with Trin, we added extra movements in for the show. We had never planned for me to take Trin's toy away from her so her character would take her medicine since Michael would not take it. I really liked this added detail since it shows the relationship between father and son in more depth by showing how strict the Father is in the household but Michael still reaches out for his toy, trying to keep a grip on being a child. 

For one show in particular, someone had been moving the sticks which are used in the lsot boy tribal dance which lead to Jess and myself to go on stage, clapping instead of using our own sticks. It was made very clear on which areas behind stage was for people's costumes and props since there was a lot of quick changes in this pantomime for the chorus. I wrote my name on the sticks and on my costume pieces but someone had still taken my sticks. Next time, there should be spare sticks so no one in the dance is left without sticks for the dance since it can make you feel like you stand out to the audience which can also make you feel silly. 

While the lost boys speak after the dance, Courteney and I planned on doing some small choreographed fighting pieces like whacking each other with our sticks or jsut poking one another as Eleanor's character is telling us to be quiet. I thought this was a great idea for the three of us since it gave the scene more actions and showed the audience the different characteristics of the boys. 
A problem with this scene was how most of the lsot boys who has speaking parts didn't project their voices loud enough. What might have helped is if there were hand held microphones, they could have been in character, snatching the microphone from each other and then the audience would be able to listen to what they were saying. 

During Colors of the wind, sometimes the three main girls, Bonita, Ebony and Chloe would still be in the way of me and Kim as we are meant to spin around each other where they stood. This was fixed after that performance since we asked them nicely to move forward to the edge of the stage so me and Kim had room to do our dance behind them. 

For Don't go breaking my heart, the back row had to be careful of the set and the light near the white sheet at the back of the stage since it was in our way to get on stage but we had to get on quickly. The set seemed to have moved or be more in line after the first two shows which gave us more room to quickly move on the stage to get to our places to do a short dance. 

During Pirates of the Caribbean dance, some people on the back row left their swords in the wings. Most of the dancers on the back row took their sword back on stage for the last part of the dance. I thought this looked messy and uneven which it should have been discussed as a group if we all went on with swords or if we all left them in the wings and continued the dance. ]]> 2018-12-17 19:31:41 UTC https://padlet.com/henrypaulcharles/g7ne1unj4px1/wish/315322373
