It is very clear in documents b and c that they were not, and it was unfair. After the slavery ended, the laws that state that no human should have their rights and freedom taken. However, In documents B and C, they are clearly stating that they were not free and that their every move was under their command. Of course they got more freedom but they never had complete freedom. If I had to describe it, I would say it's like letting the chickens go outside to a fenced area rather than only keeping them in their cage. Still no complete freedom, but a little more freedom. Even after the reconstruction they were still beaten, called sick names, and used for labor. As seen in Henry Adam’s statement there was still a huge privilege barrier that made it impossible to say they were ‘free’.
