This chapter starts off with the church bells ringing from the service for Jack Cardinal's funeral. During the service, Lou really doesn't get emotional and tunes out everything that is happening. Two men that sit behind Lou and Oz were talking about Jack and what to do with the children and their mother, Amanda. In the end, after the service at the cemetery, Lou overhears the two men talking and butts in and says that they have a grandmother that can take care of them in Virginia. Chapter 3/Pages 16-22

Task 2- Analyzing Jack Cardinal

Many times during the first couple of chapters, there are hints that shows that the Cardinals really aren't a wealthy family because Jack doesn't make that much money as a writer. An example of this is "The Lincoln Zephyr did not belong to him, for luxuries such as automobiles, fancy or plain, seemed forever beyond his reach." This definitely shows that because he was humble about his work and did not get enough money to buy expensive things. The reason he wants to go to California is to make more money for his family, not to just write better. Chapter 1/Page 3, Chapter2/Pages 8-11- Beth Rooney

Task 3- Conflict Between Lou and Amanda

It is evident, just withing the first four chapters, the Lou Cardinal and Amanda cardinal do not have a very good relationship. Lou would give anything to be more like her father, and to spend more time with him. An example of this is "Lou would always see herself as Jack Cardinal's daughter." Amanda is aware of Lou's favoritism, but she takes comfort in Oz who "rejuvenated his mother". During the argument that inevitably led to the fatal accident, Lou defends her father. This also causes a feeling of betrayal for Amanda, because it proves Lou cares for Jack more than her. Chapter 1/ Pages 4-5 -Elizabeth Snyder

Task 4- Mood of Chapters 1 through 4

From the start there is a dark and suspenseful mood given by the first line "the coming rain telegraphed by plump, gray clouds..." That suspense changes to desperation when Amanda starts praying that the rain wouldn't come. There was a strong sense of juxtaposition with the hope and innocence that the character Oz embodies. Everything he does, because he is young and niave, counterbalances all of the heavy moods. Eventually, the desperation and suspense gives way to a sad, somber mood after the car accident.
