Acid - An acid is a molecule or ion capable of either donating a proton, known as a Brønsted-Lowry acid, or, capable of forming a covalent bond with an electron pair, known as a Lewis acid.

Base - A base is a substance that can neutralise the acid by reacting with hydrogen ions. Most bases are minerals that react with acids to form water and salts. Bases include the oxides, hydroxides and carbonates of metals. Bases have a slippery feel and taste bitter.

Alkali - Alkali are strong bases that turn litmus paper from red to blue; they react with acids to yield neutral salts; they are caustic and in concentrated form are corrosive to organic tissues.

Salt - Salts are neutral chemical compounds made of cations (positive ions) attached to anions (negative ions).
