Poison gas did not account for a large amount of the deaths in WW1, because after it was created, it was discovered it was rather ineffective as a traditional weapon. The poison gas’ effectiveness depended heavily on the weather, which made it unreliable in combat. The invention of poison gas did, however, make enemies spend a lot of money and resources on possibles guarding against this weapon.
Eiss, Jennifer.

Before WW1, artillery was slow-firing. Foot soldiers would have to take long amounts of time to aim their gun before each shot was fired.
