Deviance is when you don't conform to what is seen as normal in society. Some examples of deviance are tattoos, vegan lifestyles, jogging, smoking weed, and many other things that are not fully accepted in society. What is seen as an act of deviance is dependent on the views of society and how people feel about those acts. In this case, weed was seen as deviant because many people disproved of it, but now, since a majority of people agree that weed should be legal, it is no longer seen as deviant.

-Jivraj

Joseph : Deviance is the action of rebelling (can be expressed through protests, etc). For example, the legalization of marijuana is becoming increasingly popular, evident through the fact that "67%" of people would legalize it in some way. This rebels the societal notion that marijuana is unacceptable in any form throughout the nation. While deviance can be expressed through rebelling these social expectations, it differs from a crime because it does not actively target or oppose the law (i.e. drug dealing).

The difference between deviance and crime is that deviance is something that is seen as okay to do, and not wrong. A crime is something wrong and will be looked down upon by the people. For example in the episode: Polygamy Is Illegal. A norm in this episode is that young boys weren't able to smile or talk to girls their age, while old men were.

Deviance is the act of violating a norm. The act of being deviant is Michelle going back to Wyatt. This is seen as deviant behavior as Michelle knew that such behavior was wrong as she was unwilling to be with a 62-year-old man, but, without his help, she could not raise or give up on her kids. The difference between Deviance and Crime is that deviance violates norms, while crime is breaking or violating the law.

An example of a deviant act in the episode is the fact that Wyatt had many wives. This is seen as deviant because people see polygamy as a bad thing, and it is even illegal at the federal level and in every state in the US. The difference between deviance and crime, however, is that every crime is a deviant act, as it violates laws and therefore violates the views of society, while deviance is just an act that is not accepted by society and could possibly be positive or negative.
