I hope to learn about the ideologies behind gender and the body. I am interested to learn about feminist and gender studies elements that are not primarily Western and hope to expand my current knowledge on feminist and gender studies in general. I also look forward to studying different theorists rather than the classic gender studies theorists. Additionally, I look forward to learning about these subjects from a new perspective. In my experience, the majority of my classes and the information that I've learned on these subjects has been Westernized and consequently neglects the various perspectives of gender, identity, and embodiment from across the globe. For us, what is outside gender norms is what makes people uncomfortable. For instance, when you start a new job, and you have a colleague that "looks like" inappropriate in terms of gender or biological sex.

I expect this class to teach me a lot about the body from different perspectives. I believe that this class will show me how gender and the body are connected from multiple cultural lenses. I am looking forward to seeing how other cultures view these things because it will broaden my perspective. I also expect this class to give me a new lens on how to embody our true selves so we can project that into the world. I believe that this class takes a non traditional approach and that will be refreshing to see what will be learned and projected.

As we saw in class, gender norms are behaviours that are not written yet followed by society. They are artificial and have limitations when it comes to social interactions.

• One that comes to mind when we talk about different cultures is how, in Canada, when you meet a new person, you greet them with a firm handshake. However, in Mexico, I would hug and greet them with a kiss on the cheek.

What are the consequences of living outside gender norms?

• Sadly, one of the consequences of living outside the gender norms is the threat of gender violence. Gender violence affects numerous amount of people. However, as Butler said in the video, someone who may not conform to gender norms, might be a victim of brutal violence.

• The second consequence of not conforming to gender norms might be isolation. When people become an "other" in the eyes of heteronormativity, society tends to isolate said people into marginalized communities. Such as the trans community.

How can we fight gender violence?

• Gender violence can be fought through education. We thoroughly believe that education is at the root of behaviour and understanding. Therefore, with the increase of education and specifically about feminist and queer theories, then violence might decrease as more informed people lack the need to draw upon violence.

• Typically, in society today there are expectations that women and men will dress certain ways or even expectations of the LGBTQ community wearing/expressing themselves a certain way which serves dangerous gender norms. For example: people who are non-binary may dress in different ways depending on how they feel/identify. This can make people uncomfortable because they are not used to this since it is outside of the gender norms.

2) What are the consequences of living outside gender norms?

• Discrimination/not being taken seriously in the workplace, in family situations; e.g. the woman is the breadwinner and the dad stays at home. This situation is outside of society's norms.

• Isolation or loneliness/exile from family members who are against how they choose to express/live their lives.

• Continue to create awareness on these types of subjects and discourses surrounding violence towards women and LGBTQ people. Presenting information in educational settings can help people understand the matter at hand and get a feel of why/how/when this violence happens.

Acting outside of gender norms, by defying how society has told us to be. Society doesn't right away accept. Dressing in a way that doesn't fit what femininity doesn't say. Different family dynamics - the norm is having a mom and a dad that is married, whereas adopted parents, surrogates, two moms… all against what is considered gender norms for society. There's a lot of things we don't pick up on because it's so regulated and normalized in society, we have to unlearn what has been taught to us as a gender norm.

What are the consequences of living outside gender norms?

Violence - could be gender based violence, or even being catcalled or harassed. Being more of an object in society people look at you in a different light. What people think of me, and not being accepted. More of a spectacle. Community is supposed to be all welcoming and accepting, but if that isn't the case it can be hard to navigate, and isolating. Open enough to accept yourself, but also accepted by society.

How can we fight gender violence?

Having more awareness around gender based violence, and without people understanding how vast it can be. The reality is it's more than just a wife getting hurt by her husband, by opening peoples eyes to it, it can allow for people to understand what is actually happening. Creating safe spaces to report and leave situations, as a basic principle, people need support to be able to leave or remove themselves from a situation and ensure that their violence is being taken seriously and that a solution is coming.

1. For us, an outside gender norm that can make people feel uncomfortable is when a biological woman appears to the world in "male clothes", short hair/bright hair colour, demonstrating masculine attributes such as participating in 'male' sports.  

2. The consequences of living outside gender norms include public and private isolation, risk of gender-based violence (femicide), mental health, and public scrutiny, loss of gender-affirming care.

People who identify as a woman publicly competing in a traditionally masculine sport. While having an appearance that does not aesthetically align with feminine gender norms and traditional images of femininity.

Question 2: What are the consequences of living outside gender norms? Present at least two.

One of the consequences of living outside gender norms is being marginalized by society itself. When certain characteristics and behaviours do not align with gender norms people are not able to be categorized by society and are then seen as 'others'. This can be detrimental to an individuals position in society.

A second example of a consequence of living outside gender norms is the effects it may have on an individuals identity and self-confidence. By not aligning with pre-conceived gender norms and being unable to place yourself in categories within society, individuals can experience insecurity and identity crisis.

Question 3: How can we fight gender violence?

We can fight gender violence by promoting education in regards to the colonial history of gender and gender norms that have historically been used to enforce dominance and oppress certain people, as well as the harms stigmatization causes to individuals. The label as 'other' come with a perception of threat to the fabric of society that can lead to gender based violence. By unlearning taught stereotypes and educating individuals within society about the history of gender norms and about the fact that gender is linear can help fight gender violence.

An example of what is outside the gender norm would be a father being the main caregiver of the children or a father being the stay-at-home parent. How parenting for men is viewed compared to women, women are expected to be the primary resource while men will be praised for the smallest things when taking care of their kids. The idea that fathers are “babysitting” their kid and made out to be a heroic parent.

2) What are consequences of living outside of gender norms?

a.      Social rejection

Might be rejected for job opportunities and that can lead to dangerous situations where there is a lack of resources or not making enough money to live.

b.      Health care

There is little research that includes transgender bodies who are using hormone replacement therapy. Since these bodies fall out of norms most medicine does not have a specific understanding of how they may work for their bodies. This is also seen with (cis)women since a lot of research is based on men, so some medications are not as effective for them.

3) Stepping away from labels so people do not need to define their experiences using one specific definition. This leaves space for fluidity and exploration.
