We began the week by sharing our weekend news. It was lovely to hear that everyone had enjoyed a nice break. Using colourful semantics, we built sentences together, and some of us even practised copying and writing them underneath.

This week we were introduced to two new texts linked to our topic “Into the Wild”: Where the Wild Things Are and The Great Kapok Tree.

For Where the Wild Things Are, we explored the story by learning about and describing the different monsters. We then created our own monsters using playdough, using communication boards to choose the colours we needed. The results were fantastic! Later, we used our monsters to help retell the story in the tuff tray, supported by sensory materials and sound buttons. It was a wonderfully engaging and fun experience.

On Friday, we were introduced to The Great Kapok Tree. We used sound buttons to help us follow the story and begin to understand the characters and setting. We’re excited to continue exploring this text next week.

This week in Maths we have been focusing on place value and counting, taking part in lots of practical activities to support our understanding. Some of us used Unifix cubes to build towers up to 2 and 5, used tweezers to pick up and count pom‑poms, and threaded beads to match given numbers—great for strengthening fine‑motor skills. We also enjoyed adding the number of Smarties placed on a biscuit, which made counting extra fun.

We explored numbers beyond 10 by creating different representations using concrete apparatus such as Numicon and Base Ten. Matching quantities to numerals helped us deepen our understanding of number value and structure. Everyone showed fantastic enthusiasm and made wonderful progress throughout the week.

This week in our Sensory Baking lesson, we linked our activity to our Into the Wild theme by using animal‑shaped cutters. We used our turn‑taking cards to help us wait, add, and mix the ingredients before using the tools and cutters to shape and create our biscuits. Once they were cooked and cooled, we decorated our wild animals using the appropriate foods and icing. The children showed great focus and really enjoyed bringing their animal biscuits to life.

Our topic this half term is Into the Wild. We began the week with an interactive video that encouraged us to think carefully about the habitats of different animals. We were then introduced to the sounds of the jungle, and using our growing knowledge, we worked together to identify which animals belong in a jungle environment.

After choosing a specific animal, we created our very own jungle in a jar. We carefully added soil and grass seeds to a plastic jar, placed our chosen animal inside, and then watered the seeds. Now we’re excited to watch our mini jungles grow around the animals over the next few weeks.

We also completed a sorting activity using a Venn diagram, sorting animals that live in the jungle from those that do not. Green Class showed fantastic sorting skills and great understanding of animal habitats.

The children explored the sensory playground, taking part in writing and mark‑making activities while also engaging with the different pieces of apparatus.

On Tuesday, our outdoor Maths session took us on a treasure‑style hunt. Each child was given a number and had to find, collect, and count the matching number of gold coins hidden inside envelopes. This activity brought lots of excitement and plenty of smiles.

We also had great fun exploring the bikes on Thursday, building confidence, coordination, and independence as we rode around the outdoor area.

This week, as part of our Into the Wild topic, we explored the stories “The Rainbow Fish” and “Sharing a Shell.” The children enjoyed a sensory retelling of The Rainbow Fish, created their own sparkling fish using sequins, and practised building and writing sentences through Colourful Semantics before sequencing the events of the story. When reading Sharing a Shell, the children made the characters out of play dough and thought carefully about who they would like to share a shell with, choosing from family, friends, or pets. Some children even extended their ideas by using because to explain their choices, showing lovely progress in their sentence development.

We used communication boards to help us request the items we needed, including plastic jars, plants, gravel, oil, water and plastic fish.

This week we have been reading The Rainbow Bear as part of our Into the Wild topic, focusing on the Arctic habitat. We learned that the polar bear wished to be rainbow‑coloured because he felt unnoticed as a white bear, but once his wish came true he quickly realised that being rainbow‑bright wasn’t as wonderful as he imagined. To support our learning, we explored a sensory story with icy‑cold water, created woolly polar‑bear collages, made our own snow globes, and experimented with painting and mark‑making using coloured ice. We also enjoyed making our own rainbow bears by painting a bear template inside a zippy wallet, bringing the story to life through hands‑on, creative experiences. We have also thought about how the bear felt when he was taken away from his Arctic home and taken to the zoo, as well as rescuing the animals from the ice.

This week, the children have been fully immersed in the Easter Story through a range of creative and hands‑on activities. They produced beautiful crucifix sunset pictures inspired by Impressionist art, experimenting with colour blending and expressive brushstrokes to create striking silhouettes.

We also enjoyed making our own Easter cards, taking care with both the artwork and the thoughtful messages written inside.

To make phonics even more exciting, some of our lessons moved outdoors. The children took part in a phonics Easter egg hunt, matching sounds to hidden eggs and showing fantastic teamwork and enthusiasm.

It’s been a wonderful week of creativity, learning, and springtime fun.

This week we concluded our topic Into the Wild with an exciting outdoor minibeast hunt. The children explored the school grounds with great enthusiasm and discovered all sorts of tiny creatures, including worms, woodlice and even a centipede. They showed brilliant curiosity as they observed each minibeast in its natural habitat.

Back in the classroom, we continued our learning by creating symmetrical bugs using paint and printing techniques. The children loved experimenting with colour and pattern, and their finished artwork looks fantastic.

It’s been a wonderful way to round off our topic, combining hands‑on exploration with creative expression.
