April 17, 1961-April 20 1961 - A failed attempt by the US and Cuban exiles to overthrow Fidel Castro, the invasion was planned poorly and executed badly. In the end, the invasion strengthened Castro’s administration and they were able to pursue closer ties with the Soviet Union.

Birth of Warsaw Pact

May 14, 1955 - Military alliance of communist countries, if on Warsaw Pact member state was attacked, the other member states would defend it. It was important to the Cold War because it allowed the Soviet Union to strengthen their defenses against other countries as well as starting an arms race that lasted throughout the Cold War.

This war was even more intensified by the ongoing Cold War between the US and the Soviet Union.

Yalta Conference

Feb 4-11 1945 The Allied leader met in Yalta to discuss the inevitable win against Germany and the continued fighting in the Pacific. When it came to Soviet involvement in the Pacific it was agreed that if the Soviets joined they would be given power over Port Arthur, a share in the operation of the Manchurian railroads, and the Kuril Islands. It was also agreed upon during this conference that France would help with governing post war Germany, Germany would be responsible for paying some but not all reparations, future governments in Europe would be kind to Soviet Russia, and the Soviets were to allow free elections in all territories liberated from Nazi Germany. While this Conference was originally seen as a success it was later viewed as one of FDR’s greatest failures.

Berlin Airlift
