.

Saint Peter’s Basilica is the second largest church in the world, as it can hold up to 60,000 people with the total lot is 22,000 square meters. It is built out of travertine stone and is 452 ft in height, 730 ft in length, 500 ft in width, and an interior length of over 693 ft.

St. Peter, the first pope, was believed to be buried in where the Basilica stands today. The fact that St. Peter was martyred in 64 AD concludes that the location of the Basilica is highly symbolic. The basilica was designed mainly by some notably tremendous artists: Donato Bramante, Michaelangelo, Carlo Maderno, and Bernini. The basilica is admired for its renaissance sculpture with the fusion of baroque and renaissance architecture.

The Christian Church was immensely influenced and linked with the fine arts of architecture during the 9th century and onwards. The basilica also shows many types of decorative art such as stained glass windows, mural paintings, tapestry art, illuminated manuscripts and miniature painting, mosaic art and icon-painting. The use of these decorative art was mainly focused on inspiring the people with the Christian message.

There are four piers in the basilica that are six feet in height in order to support the huge dome of the basilica. The basilica floor is also notably elevated at around 12.5 feet because of the marshy ground beneath it. The dome of the basilica stands 120 meters and the inner diameter is 42 meters. The dome of the basilica has a high and pointed shell in order to distribute weight and lessen the lateral thrust. The basilica also features the form of barrel vaults. The interior of the basilica contains and uses lots of marble in sculptures and columns.

St. Peter’s Basilica is one of the most iconic and respected architectural landmarks. It features a wide array of advanced architectural structures and designs as mentioned earlier. It shows how skilfully and elegantly old architecture was. St. Peter’s Basilica is also very significant in renaissance architecture and it is very unique due to the fact the it is a fusion between two types or styles of architecture: Baroque and Renaissance.
