How was the theme of jealousy manifested through different characters inside the play Othello?

The destructive power of jealousy is emphasised through its manifestations between Othello and Iago.

For Othello, his jealousy is rooted in his status as an outsider due to his race and background as a Moor, which makes him question his worthiness in Desdemona's eyes, amplifying his fear to lose her. Iago exploits Othello's insecurities by insinuating that Desdemona is unfaithful. Due to his own sensitivity, planting seeds of doubt that grow into overwhelming jealousy.

Whereas for Iago, his jealousy stems from his own feelings of inadequacy and resentment. He is envious of Cassio for being promoted to lieutenant over him and harbors a deep-seated grudge against Othello. Iago's jealousy motivates him to orchestrate Othello's downfall through cunning manipulation. He crafts elaborate schemes to make Othello doubt Desdemona's loyalty, showcasing how jealousy can lead to deceit and betrayal. Iago embodies the theme of jealousy as a catalyst for evil, using it as a tool to unleash chaos in the lives of those around him.

The 1964 film Zorba the Greek follows Basil, a reserved English writer, who travels to Crete to reopen a lignite mine. He meets Alexis Zorba, a lively, free-spirited Greek man who becomes his foreman and teaches him to embrace life with passion. In their village, Zorba pursues a romance with Madame Hortense, while Basil falls for a young widow, both relationships ending in tragedy. Despite the mine's failure, Zorba's zest for life leaves a lasting impact on Basil, who learns to celebrate existence through joy and resilience.

Self commentary - Narrative choice (use of past tense)

Lao She’s use of past tense creates narrative distance and may reflect a traditional Chinese storytelling approach, where tales of moral or historical significance are often told as completed narratives. It also situates the novel as a critique of a specific era (pre-WWII Beijing), framing Xiangzi’s suffering as part of a larger, unresolved social tragedy, allowing Lao She to weave in social commentary. In addition, Lao She’s use of the past tense in Rickshaw Boy creates a powerful effect of detachment. The past tense creates a sense that Xiangzi’s story is already over, as if the narrator is looking back on a completed tragedy. This distances the reader from immediate emotional engagement, making Xiangzi’s suffering feel inevitable rather than suspenseful. Lao She’s past tense is not just a grammatical choice but a narrative tool that deepens the novel’s themes of futility and societal critique.

Credible. Convincing. Confident.

References: Well chosen.

Lao She’s Rickshaw Boy left a profound impression on me through its portrayal of Xiangzi’s relentless, yet futile, struggle against an oppressive society. The hexagonal ring analysis revealed how meticulously the novel constructs its central message of systemic powerlessness. By mapping these connections, I also saw how places, themes and symbols converge to create an inescapable web of oppression, underscoring how societal structures shape these characters' downfall not as a personal failure but as an inevitable consequence of a world that is designed to crush individuality and hope. This activity has deepened for this work, challenging me to grapple with uncomfortable truths about power, poverty, and the cost of inequality.

Chariots of Fire (1981) is a British film based on the true story of two athletes, Harold Abrahams and Eric Liddell, competing in the 1924 Paris Olympics. Abrahams, a Jewish Cambridge student, is driven to succeed partly to overcome anti-Semitic prejudice, while Liddell, a devout Scottish Christian missionary's son, runs to glorify God. The film explores their personal motivations, struggles with identity, and the societal pressures they face. Liddell refuses to run on the Sabbath, which tests his faith and athletic career. Ultimately, both win gold medals, symbolizing triumph over personal and social challenges.

In this activity, I explored the "different layers of meaning" in the movie Rebecca. When I was doing this, I watched some youtube videos and critical analyses that discussed about Hitchcock's style of filming and I was able to gather insights on small things that I have not noticed when I watched the movie. One instance of such is the use of "large arches, dark cavernous hallways, and grandiose staircases," in which I was able to link it with the theme of oppression. It was also interesting to see how Hitchcock utilises specific settings and camera angles to externalise the protagonist's internal psychological torment. Overall, this exercise demonstrates how directorial choices in visual design are integral to the film's narrative and emotional impact, shaping the viewer's perception of character dynamics and suspense.

The Power of Acceptance: Much of our suffering stems not from the challenges themselves, but from our resistance to them. Sisyphus is miserable when he hopes to succeed but once he accepts his fate, the gods' attempt to punish his spirit fails. This teaches me the value of acceptance in my own life, focusing on the present moment.

Meaning is Self-Created: Camus dismantles the idea that meaning is handed to us by an external source. Instead, he asserts that we must create our own meaning through our choices and actions. Reading this book made me realise that I too, often fights against the meaninglessness in life. I want to apply for dentistry in university but I sometimes struggle with self-doubt when I do not make progress or maintain my grades. However, Camus has helped me realise that this struggle is not a sign of failure, but a necessary component of a meaningful life. The value of my pursuit isn't solely in the eventual outcome, instead, its true worth lies in my conscious engagement with the effort and the meaning I personally assign to the struggle itself.
