Growing up I’ve been a very lucky person because I was able to grow up with loving parents who would regularly show affection to me. My mom, being a kindergarten teacher, has told me so much about what she does at work and it is very clear that she is so passionate in  what she does, and that she loves the kids that she teaches. While growing up seeing and hearing my mom talk about some children who have not had the best lives I immediately knew that that’s what I wanted to do, I wanted to be able to better the lives of children. I knew from a very young age that I wanted to help children who are less fortunate in different types of ways. When I learned about being a child and youth care worker I immediately knew that this was the profession for me. I know that this is the right field for me because of my core beliefs. I believe that every child should have an equal chance no matter their ethnicity, or disabilities. I am also a very strong believer in justice. I truly believe that children do deserve justice for being mistreated and I want to be able to help those children to achieve that. I was also really called to the field because of the characteristics that you need to have while working amongst children. I am a very calm, and encouraging person with great social communication skills as well as the ability to think quickly in tough situations. Being able to help children is all that I want to do. Which is why I knew that being a child and youth care worker would allow me to live my passions in my career.

As an older sister I feel as though I’m a very empathetic person which may be an issue. I know that some people aren’t comfortable with any type of affection and that would be difficult for me because I like to be able to comfort people. I know that because this is not always acceptable, boundaries are very important. I believe that they are important for myself as well as for the children that I am working with and so I know that I need to set boundaries for myself as well as children's boundaries for them, and follow them to ensure that everybody is as comfortable as they can be. Another challenge that might come up while working would be communication barriers. Meaning, either language barriers because they speak a different language, or mental barriers that make it difficult for them to speak and express themselves. I believe that these two would be the biggest challenges for me entering the field.

Throughout my journey being a child and youth care worker I hope to give children confidence, and to maintain a safe and comfortable space. Being able to see a child flourish when they themselves didn't think that they would be able to would be the greatest accomplishment. Knowing that I am able to change the lives of children who cannot change them for themselves. I also hope to accomplish being able to understand the needs of children, and providing them with things to encourage them into becoming a part of society. Another thing that I hope to accomplish is experience. Having experience will allow me to better myself as a person because being a child and youth care worker requires selflessness and integrity.
