By writing that the government is ‘reportedly’ working to change things, Marlton highlights the secrecy and corruption of government agencies. There is no way to know if anything will change those that are wrongly treated in prisons, and no deadline, which creates feelings of insincerity where there is acknowledgment but a lack of action. This is exemplified through the use of the word ‘some’, showing how governments will only do the least amount necessary. Instead of solving the full problem, Marlton explains that politicians only want to be re-elected, and without strong public support, change making policies are scarce to come by. Marlton also writes that ‘for some reason [new policies are] a very slow process’. The use of the words ‘for some reason’ again shows the secrecy of the government, and how factors can influence things behind closed doors, encouraging corruption and a lack of goodwill. The author also uses the word “anyway”, a word which sounds highly sarcastic in the context that it is referring to a very real problem of people being held in inhumane conditions, seemingly brushing off the issue. This leads into a statement made in a very insincere tone, taking the voice of the Australian government saying that now one family is let go, people can “worry about something else”. This is a highly empathic statement criticising how the government is attempting to redirect negative attention by showing one standalone case that is insignificant in the face of the larger issue. The banner saying “mission accomplished” expands upon this as it seems like a misunderstanding of the problem and its portrayal as a celebration seems like a declaration of victory despite the fact that this action is only covering up the issue rather than solving it. This makes the government come off as manipulative and corrupt.
