Garlic is is known to have medicinal properties and is widely cultivated in the Philippines. For many years, garlic was used as treatment for several health concerns like high blood pressure, wounds, and many more. The abundance of garlic in the Philippines served as an inspiration for the researchers to further study the properties of garlic. Garlic contains allicin which is responsible for its antimicrobial properties. The researchers then thought about utilizing its extract to inhibit the growth of Trichophyton rubrum.

Trichophyton rubrum is a type of dermatophyte responsible for the occurrence of numerous fungal infections like onychomycosis, ringworm, athlete's foot and many more. The researchers wanted to find an alternative source of treatment aside from oral medication and topical creams.
