I can listen without judgement; I can play Devil's Advocate to make sure all sides of an issue are addressed. To me this is part of being a professional in the public arena. I can 'act ' impartial and not become upset over comments made in the classroom, because 'educator me' is not always the real me. No one should get better treatment than anyone for any reason. You should have expectations that be met by everyone and follow through. Try not to prejudge based on knowledge or what you hear from other people. I also refrain from thinking that what I value they will also value by having internal dialogues that help me to not impose my thinking on to them. I like to provide students with the opportunity to share what they feel and provide a situation in which we can all learn from each other. The same goes with colleagues. I have to remember to be respectful of someone else's opinions on their child or what they taught their child. I also have to pray a lot, and be confident as a teacher that I can teach every child no matter their religious beliefs, values, culture, etc. It is not up to me to impose my values unless it is common values such as mutual respect and a little common sense.

If you show respect to others and remaining inside your own boundaries it is increasingly easier to stay on the right path. Our school is diverse, but primarily leans towards one ethnic group than others. To incorporate everyone in my classroom, I use what I have learned about each student to make them feel comfortable. I encourage my students to share with their parents the discussions we have in class; even if those topics are are hard to talk about. More importantly, having a teacher-student or teacher-parent relationship helps to put the biases aside.
