This papelito was written early in the semester, just as I was getting started with physics. Being such an important subject to me, the first few weeks of physics were the hardest on me, I felt a lot of pressure to succeed. It is fitting then, that I decided to reflect on my past experience with the subject, and what it has always meant to me. I chose to share this papelito because I feel it encapsulates a big part of my personality. The sciences are important to me and this is outlined perfectly here. This papelito connects mostly to course goal 5B, where I am looking at my personal values and goals that have influenced me. I didn’t explicitly discuss how these goals influence my writing style, so there is some disconnect from the course goal, but it connects loosely.

This papelito came just after we finished the final assignment of unit 1, which was our place profile. I wrote this papelito as a reflection of my own capabilities when it comes to this style of writing. I am generally a decent writer, but I do have some pretty significant weaknesses, and this assignment required that I work on those weaknesses to get a quality place profile. Descriptive scene writing is far from my forte, so it took a lot of patience from me to get it right in the end. I think that the course goal this papelito fills best is 5C. It is a reflection of how this assignment has given me experience for future assignments like it.

Prompt: “This week we need to identify our "target audience" for our digital stories, but thinking on a bigger scale...who are the people that you want to communicate with the most, even after this course is over? Who do you want to reach? What communities (or individuals) are the ones that need your voice the most- the people you will serve with your words? Who do you really want to write for?”

This papelito was written about my experience getting the opportunity to write specifically within my field of interest and how I hope to continue doing that in the future. Throughout the semester I’ve had to write lab reports for my physics class and they have been an absolute treat to write. I love to get into the details of the theory and the math behind what we are studying. I think this papelito best applies to course goal 1D. It’s a loose fit, but this papelito is discussing the audience of my writing and why I want to write, although not explicitly the conventions that come from that.

For this assignment I was required to go to a place and identify 20 specific details about that place including details on sights, smells, sounds, etc. The assignment serves as practice for creating detailed sensory descriptions of a place to help the reader understand what it’s like to be there. Having to find 20 specific details about a place was surprisingly difficult, by the end of each part of the assignment it was a struggle for me. This assignment helped me understand the importance of being very thorough in my observations, and looking at every little thing to help describe a space.

The things that stuck out to me most as I was analyzing this excerpt from The House on Mango Street were how the author uses almost universal experiences to appeal to the audience. I also noted her use of metaphors and personification in the excerpt. Her excellent use of descriptive metaphors on top of her ability to relate small details to the audience was impressive to me, and I wanted to do as much as I could to replicate it in the upcoming assignment. The purpose of the assignment was to help us use research and close reading to analyze a text, as well as pick out pieces we wanted to try to replicate in our own place profiles.

This assignment was difficult for me at first because I had no idea how I would integrate both my thesis statement about STEM representation and the place I chose to focus on. In the end, I decided to sort of split them up, with the initial section being about the consultation room in the phys-atmos building and then transitioning to some data I had gathered. At a point, this assignment for me ended up as an expository/argumentative essay with visuals to aid my argument. This wasn’t the exact goal of the assignment, but I went with it anyways. As far as I could tell from the assignment description, the intention was for us to put a greater focus on place than I did. I think this assignment helped me learn how to integrate multi-media more effectively into my writing. Normally I prefer to just use text to get my point across but I was able to use some pretty good visuals in this assignment.

I am comfortable with peer review in general. I like to see what ways I can improve a piece in progress. I got quite a few suggestions from both the professor and my peer reviewer, and I tried to work on most of what they suggested. Some specifics are that some of my visuals weren’t adequately explained so I had to describe their purpose in greater detail and that I should include a call back to the introduction in the conclusion to tie the piece together. I think that my StoryMap definitely improved after the peer review process, but it could still be better. I think that some of the additions I did to the first draft on the way to the final draft were slightly tacked on when they could have been fleshed out a bit more. In the future I’d like to do a better job of integrating my inclusions based on review into the overall text.
