What were the sites of the world’s first civilization? It was Mesopotamia, the area between the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers (in modern day Iraq), is often referred to as the cradle of civilization because it is the first place where complex urban centers grew. What does Mesopotamia mean in Greek? The name comes from a Greek word meaning “between rivers, referring to the land between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. but the region can be broadly defined to include the area that is now eastern Syria, southeastern Turkey, and most of Iraq. What is the Fertile Crescent? Its Named for its rich soils, the Fertile Crescent, often called the “cradle of civilization ,is found in the Middle East.... Irrigation and agriculture developed here because of the fertile soil found near these rivers. What two regions was Mesopotamia divided? The neighboring steppes to the west of the Euphrates and the western part of the Zagros Mountains are also often included under the wider term Mesopotamia. A further distinction is usually made between Upper or Northern Mesopotamia and Lower or Southern Mesopotamia.
