Fashion has become a popular phenomenon in society, both the upper and lower class. Diiferent communities have different fashion trends and this variety of emerging trends have confused many people, and led to many fashion disaters. Fashion has become a form of self expression and can also be considered as a means of attaining a better standard of living. However, following trends has become quite impractical due to the cost and quality of the "latest" clothing lines. Some slang terms have also been formed to address those who follow trends, such as " bougie" or "high-maintenance". Advantages aside, the fashion industry has a very strong imapct on the environment, living standards and ones pocket.

Fashion has become quite wasteful, and has an ever increasing adverse effect in the environment. As soon as a new trend emerges, people begin discarding their possessions and buying the "in" ones. The things that are cast aside never reach it to those who need it and are instead dumped into landfills or wose, the sea. 15% of the produced clothing ends up in the oceans, decomposing to form micro plastics which are consumed by marine life, travelling upwards in the food chain, and sometimes winding up on our plates. This contaminates our food causing dietary problems and contributing to environmental degradation.

Some people have also started to believe that fashion and its trends are a gateway to a better, more awarding life. However, this statement can only be true for those willing to throw away their money after every 2 or 3 months, as new products appear in the market. "High-end" brands are quite expensive and can only be afforded by a small part, around 1% of the community. For example, a Burberry trench coat costs around $ 4,506, and thats just the base price. Such amounts of money can provide food for a family for around 4 months and many people in both 1st and 3rd world countries are living under the poverty base-line. Spending in such amounts increases the size of ones ego, makes them self-centred and leads to an unequal distribution of wealth, making the rich, richer and the poor, poorer. Brands that cater the elite class are the epitome of capitalism, and sometimes use children and women as labour, paying them meager amounts of money to increase their profit margin.

Following fashion trends can also make people go against their religions teachings and their moral values. The products appearing in the market either show too much skin or are "body-con" and show ones figure. Countries in the middle east as well as south east Asia are loosing their cultural identities as western apparel is preffered to be worn in urban areas. Many countries are becoming "Anglicized" and thus a majority of this generation do not know how to speak their mother tongue nor have any intrest in there home countries history, heroes or future. Many high school graduates move abroad for studies and settle their, as they believe the western way of living is superior, and this thought was stamped into them from the media they consumed in their early years. This hinders the development of countries in the east

A common misconceptions about fashion is that, fashion is the trending or the latest style of clothing, hair, decoration, or behaviour this is obviously a fallacy. In actuality fashion is a lifestyle or a mode of life which is not limited to certain aspects of life.
Fashion should not be followed by every individual of society. Fashion has greatly influenced the social norms of society and often this adversely affects the liking and disliking of people as they are forced to act in a certain way and compromise their liberty and freedom due to the intolerance of the society. These days fashion is nothing more than a liability for people who have to invest time, money and efforts to keep up with the trending fashion. Many people can not spare their time and money on such a strenuous and purposeless thing.
Based on the above mentioned reasons I believe that though fashion is a important part of life people should be given a choice of whether they want to follow the fashion or not.

Argumentative writing:

Fashion cannot be summed up in one definition. People may refer to it as a prevailing style of clothes at the time or as a form of self-expression. Fashion has many varieties and a person chooses their type of fashion which suites himself the best l. This may be street style, formal style, vintage, ethnic, sporty, gothic, bohemian or even punk fashion. It may not only be limited to clothing but also includes shoes, hairstyle, etiquette and attitude towards life. Fashion is important as it reflects the culture of the world and makes it colorful. Fashion is always evolving and we have seen different waves of fashion from 1920 to 1990 and beyond. I am against that fashion should be followed by every individual in the society as everyone has their own choice!

Fashion is extremely temporary and expires very quickly. The current fashion shoes may become old-fashioned within a month and can again take place of a new fashion trend after a month. This means if it comes rapidly, it will be gone with the same speed. It is just like a pile of leaves which don't settle down at one position permanently and constantly move with the wind. Therefore, one will always have to adjust their style and will eventually lead to exhaustion, fatigue and draining.

In general, fashion trends may lead to shallow social values. If people just care about their visual appearance and not about inner values, chances are that this may lead to a world where people become quite self-centered and loose empathy for each other. People are frequently body-shamed who try to loose weight by starving themselves. Eating disorders and diseases such as anorexia have come from this. 40% of models are said to be anorexic to some extent due to the pressure of weight-loss

If you want to follow latest fashion trends, you will have to spend plenty of time on your fashion. In fact, since trends change so quickly you will have to buy new materials which may lead to financial instability or excessive loss of money for fashion and may interfere in daily life activities. Old clothes which are in good condition are also disposed off even though they could be donated to the poor and needy which shows the excessive loss of money due to fashion. Throwing it away into landfills or even the sea can cause global warming and even resource depletion!!

Although the above stated points illustrate that fashion does not have to be followed by every individual, it should be followed by those who want to follow it but they should keep in mind, the limits set by our religion which suggests modesty and humility. Prophet (PBUH) used to say "Modesty produces nothing but good".

Should fashion be followed by EVERY individual in the society.

When the word Fashion is brought up, people often relate it to something that is expensive and can be followed by the rich. This misconception of fashion did miss lead people in providing a humongous profit to the fashion industries. That now cater a 300-hundred-dollar worth in the global market. This trend led the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to predict its growth to about 5.4% last year. Which had a drastic downfall due to Covid-19. That led to an 8.8% downfall in GDP of Fashion Industries.

The need for daily necessities made people realise their idealistic approach towards fashion. Which is a manner of doing something. Fashion is a form of self-expression, self-catering and self-autonomy at a particular period. In short, it is defined as one’s prevailing style of dress or behaviour. It can include the clothing style, the living style and the etiquette.

Hence the query, Should Fashion be Followed by Every Individual in the Society?

It depends on one’s own will and urge to do so. Else, no, Fashion is not bound to be followed when one can express themselves with their own style and attire.

Every individual in a society has a right to practice their own style of living. It could be either simple or entrancing. However, when it comes to following a trend many global losses are faced. They may include our very own nature. The fashion industries accounts for 10% harmful gases released in the air. That majorly include carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide.

In that 10%, 40% is in the form of fibre and its production. The 8% is from its stitching and manufacturing. The rest is the pollution caused by its transportation methods. The vehicles that are used, often release poisonous gases into the environment.

This is not all, elastane that is woven into cotton and polyester, which is most commonly used in the fashion industries is made of synthetic plastic. Synthetics makes it difficult to recycle, and it being a plastic synthetic adds up years in its decomposition. It takes about 450 to 1000 years to decompose.

To be precise, fashion that makes people get new clothes after every few days, months and even years, adds up the years for its decomposition. All in all, causing the landfills to get full and release more toxic gases in air when burnt.
Fashion may be a self-expression, but it is extremely demeaning to the environment. Henceforth, one does not need to wear such extravagant outfits to show themselves as trend followers, instead they could start using the sustainable methods to practice fashion and become their own trend setters.

Fashion is a form of self expression and autonomy at a particular period; it is a way to show off your extravagance and a rich lifestyle, making one with good fashion sense the center of attention attracting others to show or give off a much better look.

In comparison if a person follows the fashion trend he basically turns him/herself into something they’re not, creating what some would call a fake personality or disguise to act cool or aesthetic in a society. the people follow others trends and change themselves to fit into society by dressing up like others. This should not be the case though as every person and individual has a right of choice and freedom of what to wear, by bringing in fashion trends we are basically telling people to follow that particular trend creating inequality as not being fashionable enough leads to body shaming which can have serious effects on mental health as a person thinks he or she is not good enough or does not have a good fashion choice to fit in society. According to the UK statistics Just over one third of adults said they had ever felt anxious (34%) or depressed (35%) because of their body image or simply because they were not fashionable enough.

Similarly in order to allow fashion and show off people buy clothes that can sometimes be very expensive and costly, especially young people who don’t think about the repercussions of it. This can disturb their monthly budgets. As I said earlier fashion is a way of grabbing attention, it makes you feel like you have importance in the world although this is not the case most young people think of it that way. They blackmail their parents into buying them expensive clothing. Not just that people also use their savings and pocket moneys to buy clothes which is a waste of money as the money their summed u could have been used somewhere productive e.g. invested or used to buy other useful things. The thing about clothes is that after some time we grow out of its size then we have to maintain or body and its hard to keep up so after some time the expensive clothes people buy are wasted. Some people are so crazy about fashion trends and clothing that they don’t wear the same outfit twice!

Relatively it harms the norms and values of a society to such at an extent that it violates culture too. The biggest example would be of our own country Pakistan where we have been so influenced by the fashion that we have come up with our own terms for it creating a divide in culture, terms such as ‘Burgers’ and ‘desi’s’ have created a rift in our day to day lives. Though it is up to us to follow trends, yes it is totally agreed but we need to have a certain body shape, a certain style e.g. we need to have a good strong body, too much skinny or too much fat is not appreciated, if you’re skinny you’re weak and if too much fat you are obese. From clothing to cars, housing to body language everything needs to be fashionable. In this way a person is well appreciated in society.

However fashion creates room for progress and creativity. It is a way for a person to express themselves it is not imposed on anyone but it is up to individuals themselves to wear what they want to wear. Fashion trends are improved upon and made better hence increasing thought process of a person, it increases imagination of a person and fashion industry is one of the most excelling industries of this century. In a world where everything is digital and media has more power new fashion ideas and models inspire the youth to become their best selves

To sum up everything that has been stated so far every person has their own opinion and choice of what to wear and what not to. Everyone has their own lives and they can plan it and live it out as they want to. Criticism, body shaming and discrimination must stop and people should be appreciated for their natural looks not their lifestyle and fashion sense.

The world of Fashion is a vast arena and encompasses every sphere of your life and your activities. Fashion today has taken a front seat and is of topmost priority to every individual from every age group. The word “fashion” in itself covers a wide arena from clothing to your mode of education, to your way of communication. For instance, everything today holds a prefix to it in the form of ‘out of’ or ‘in’ fashion. Though the impact of fashion is more visible in the lives of youngsters – from the teenagers to the working professionals – it’s not that the others are left out. All that we do today has got to be fashionable and the latest to the list is whether you are tech savvy, the way you communicate, the way you present yourself everything ought to be fashionable today. Though in the past, fashion predominantly was related to the designer wear – clothing, footwear, accessories and other similar items, the scope of the word has increased gradually and now it covers everything that you can name of.
