Sonya Romero

I think a great example of a teacher going above and beyond for her students is Sonya Romero. She thinks being a teacher is about more than teaching lessons. She teaches kindergarten at Albuquerque, New Mexico. Every morning she asks every student if they had breakfast and then get them breakfast. Then she assess students for more needs. She keeps socks, scarves, jackets, toothbrushes, and other supplies on hand. She now gets supplies from the community and what she doesn't use she sends down to the next school that is also in poverty. She even fostered two of her students who were in a situation where they needed a new home. She is an example to us all.

Mr. Saxey

Teacher Saxey was an ninth-grade shop teacher at a school in Salt Lake. I knew him and he had a side job of making metal sheds. He donated extra metal to the class room for those who could not afford to buy the required metal. He was actually cutting up whole sheets of metal that he had purchased for his shed business to provide for those who needed it at his own expense. Most in class had equal materials for projects. Students helped each other because they all had something in common regarding the goal of completing their projects. Mr. Saxey never mentioned he was purchasing and cutting whole, perfect sheets.

A teacher I found that exhibited willingness to go above and beyond for his students was this man Chris Ulmer. Mr. Ulmer is a special education teacher in Jacksonville, Florida who noticed something that he wanted to change for his students so he took action. He noticed many of these students were struggling to fit in and feel acceptance in their schools so he personally wanted them to know they were loved. Each day he would start out by taking each student individually and shower them with compliments. Not only did he notice they were happier each day but that their schooling was improving too.

Mark Sully

Mr Sully taught math and P.E at Alderman Newton Secondary School in Leicester, England. He was extremely strict and didn't tolerate any messing around. He only had a few classroom rules but they had to be followed or the punishment was swift. Most of the kids in the school were scared of him and gave him a wide birth, however if you followed the rules and didn't mess around he would spend extra time helping you. My friends and I were in most of the sports teams at school and Mr Sully would spend extra time coaching and going to games with us. Some of us also played football (soccer) for club teams on a Saturday and he would come and support us from the sidelines. The biggest impact was when one of our players became seriously ill and was in hospital paralyzed. The hospital was about 100 miles away and Mr Sully was the only teacher to visit. Even though he was super strict he showed he cared by being there for us and supporting us.

When Lila's parents found out that their daughter was suffering from an autoimmune disease that caused kidney failure they did everything they could to help her. This included launching a nationwide search to find a kidney that was compatible. When all was said and done, Lila's preschool teacher, Beth, was a perfect match and was able to donate to Lila what she needed.
-Abbi Liddell
