When the Soviet Union broke up, Armenia was one of the countries that was formed as a result. The Ottoman rulers and people were primarily Muslim but they allowed other minority religions to practice while under their rule. The Armenians were almost entirely Christian and they were subjugated to discrimination from the Ottomans. After the Ottoman Empire began to fall the Turks still ruled over the Armenian people. In the 1890s Armenian people started calling for equal treatment and for more political representation. In 1915, during the middle of World War I the Armenian Genocide began. Turks killed and forced Armenians out of their historic homeland ignorer to expand a new Turkish empire eastward. In 1918 the Arminians finally acquired weapons and military and defended themselves, agents, the Turkish invasion. At the end of World War I, Turkey as well as the other Central Powers lost the war and ended the Turkish invasion. The Allied Powers ended up recognizing Armenia as an independent republic in 1920. Armenia was now a nation-state located on part of their original homeland. Armenia was once again taken over by the Soviet Union during the cold war just after World War II. Armenia is already a nation state. In 1918 they experienced a brief period of independence before being taken over by the Soviet Union, but when that dissolved they became the nation-state they are today.
