Thus poem was written when in Juan Felipe's life he lost a friend and is writing a poem about what occurred after his friend died. "They're writing about you Phil..." The poem was written in such a way that Juan Felipe wrote to his friend not another reader. I think this is an eye-opener about how the world around you goes on even if you are facing a difficult time in your personal life. ..."it did not matter to you - you just.... jitterbugged and whirled past a distant gate."

Fatima Marin

"100 Love Sonnets: XVII" by Pablo Neruda

Pablo Neruda dedicated "100 Love Sonnets" to his third wife, Matilde Urrutia. He actually cheated on his second wife with Urrutia, so their love might has not has been pure as the way he describes it and it might be the "secret" that he talks about in the poem. He also teaches the difference between love for materials and the love for people. In the end, even Neruda admits that no one can describe love with words because we just feel it.

Jennifer Vu

In Monologue For An Onion, the character mentioned "cutting" the onion was crying. Personally, the character crying probably had a bad marriage with someone and was cutting an onion. The description of cutting the onion gave it a deep meaning to the breakup and seeing the aftermath of the break up. In the last stanza, it said "Lost in its maze of chambers, blood, and love", the mentioning of "love" allowed me to understand the meaning of the poem.
                                        Paul Pham

You can tell when she says "Did you want to see me broken?" and in other lines saying that African Americans should be on their knees with tears falling down their eyes.

Christopher Bui

In Salutation to Eternal Peace by Sarojini Naidu

Naidu's purpose for the poem was to open up people's minds on their views about how the world is depicted. During the Indian Independence Movement, Naidu walked alongside Ghandi using her poetry to speak for her thoughts and experiences during this harsh political time. Throughout the poem she compares natures wonders with her own personal forte on life. Though doing this makes it hard for the reader to interpret, reading in between the lines will discover the hidden meaning of life and its companion, peace.

- Nadia Castillo

This poem was written in 1985, because Maya Angelou fell in love with a young man. She was going to send this poem to the young man and it turned out to be a big poetry hit. She grew up around prejudice and discrimination, when she was young she was sexually assaulted by her mothers boyfriend for years. After her uncles killed the man that was raping her she went virtually mute for awhile. I feel like apart of "Touched by An Angel" was her way of releasing that pain an anger and discovering that you have to let love in to be free from any loneliness.

-Aja Calhoun
