Hodgkin Lymphoma is a cancer in the blood and bone marrow, it affects the lymphatic system and prevents it from working properly. The lymphatic system is important to the immune system and helps keep blood clean, when cancer gets into the lymphatic system it can cause the immune system to collapse and not be able to function. This cancer can occur almost anywhere but most commonly begins in the lymph nodes in the upper part of the body.

Although the exact cause for Hodgkin Lymphoma is not known, doctors and scietnistist have figured out that HL is a mutation in the DNA of the white blood cells called B lymphocytes. They have also proven that there are a few things that increase the chance of getting HL and also may be the cause of getting the cancer.

- Family History: If Hodgkin Lymphoma runs in the family, then it is more likely that you will develop this cancer as a result of DNA and genes.

- Previous Epstein- Barr Infection: Half of patients that suffer from HL have a history of a Epstein - Barr Infections. This disease has been tied to HL but with no route cause. Epstein - Barr Infection affects the immune system, which is most likely the connection to HL.

-Previous Mononucleosis (Mono): Research has shown that people with a past record of having Mono have are three times more likely to get HL than the general population.

-HIV: Research has also shown that people suffering from HIV have a greater chance at getting HL as a result of their immune systems being under constant stress.

Treatment

There are many different treatment styles to try to heal or reverse cancer. Some are a lot less effective than others. In our modern day and time there are more effective and productive ways to kill off cancer cells than just a home remedy as seen in the past. Hodgkin Lymphoma is one of the easiest cancers to treat, based on American cancer society there is an average of an 86% survival rate. Three of the most commonly used treatment methods for HL are:

Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy is a chemical method to kill off lymphoma cells. The chemicals run through your bloodstream to your entire body to get to all of the cancer cells. This method is often combined with radiation in the early stages of HL. There are several combinations of chemotherapy drugs used to treat HL. This method comes with many side effects and isn't the safest method for the body. Short term side effects are hair loss, and nausea. Long term side effects for chemotherapy are much more serious; heart and lung damage, fertility problems and can even cause different cancers to occur, such as leukemia.

Radiation: Radiation therapy is a method that uses high beams of energy to kill cancer cells. This method is often used after chemotherapy, or at the same time. Radiation is a more direct method to kill off the cancer cells in one specific spot. The machine used to perform radiation is a large machine that moves around you and then zeros in on a specific spot to shoot the beams of energy into your skin. Just as any method to kill of cancer has risks, radiation can cause cancer in other spots of the body and also can kill of many of the good cells that our bodies need to survive.

Surgery: Surgery is rarely used to treat HL, because the cancer cells do not usually create a solid tumour. Although, if the cancer cells move to the stomach or thyroid gland, they will perform surgery to remove the solid tumour. Surgery may also occur while treating HL to deal with pain and/or other issues related to the other treatment methods of HL.

Based on a UK study 1 in 360 (~0.3%) of males will be diagnosed with HL in their lifetime. While females are 1 in 505 (~0.2%).

Hodgkin Lymphoma can be detected early on. If a patient is undergoing the symptoms associated with HL, a doctor may use one of five tests to diagnose HL.
1. Physical Exam- Checking lymph nodes for intense swelling.

2. Blood Test- Removing blood for lab tests.

3. Imaging Tests- Using X-rays, CT scans or positron emission tomography to view tissues/organs within the body.

4.

While going through treatments for HL and having the cancer, your body becomes vulnerable and your immune system is weak. It is important to eat healthy and exercise to keep your immune system awake and working even in the slightest way. Avoid eating raw food and other foods that may put you in risk of getting sick. There have not been any connections between your diet and getting HL, or between your diet and preventing the cancer. Although, it is critical to be eating healthy and nutritious foods all the time to keep your body healthy and your immune system healthy, especially while going through treatments.

Lifestyle And environment

Peer pressure can affect a lot of things in people's lives, such as drinking and doing drugs. studies have tied peer pressure to an environmental risk of getting HL. One of the main risks of getting HL is having a weakened immune system, on numerous accounts many people diagnosed with HL also stated that they had been pressured or did unsafe hormones in the form of a drug. This environmental risk is also a lifestyle choice, someone's environment may have caused someone to do unsafe drugs weakening the immune system but doing drugs is also a lifestyle choice. These choices and environments can not cause cancer but they can increase the chance of getting HL. To prevent increasing the chance of getting HL, keeping away from unsafe drugs and making sure that your immune system is in good shape will benefit your lifestyle and also decrease the chance of getting HL.
